hey everyone!
I was wondering what type of water filter I should purchase.I want a small, portable, reliable one and was thinking of the Katadyn Hiker water filter but all the reviews I've seen about it aren't so good...
Thanks for your time!

Though some of the newer filters are not on here, here is a link to the US Army's testing results of water filters.

Looks like the MSR Sweet Water (purification system not just the filter alone) beats them all out. Also interesting to note, is that the Katadyn - Micropur tablets have a great rating!

I have used a Pur(now Katadyn) Hiker for over 10 years and it always worked well. The elements are expensive but you shouldn't have to buy one for a long time given your usage.

I also have a MSR Waterwoks but have not used it on the trail but it does seem to pump out a good rate of flow.

The other filter I have used was the Sweetwater, it was back when they first came out around 95 or so. It was very slow and pumping was a chore, I think it even ended up breaking its first time out. I have used the Hiker ever since.

Got the Katadyn hiker, It seems to work well for my needs and expectations.

I see from your posts your new. Something that took awile for me to learn about was the serch function. It allows you to reserch previous threads about topics such as this. Give it a whirl its very handy.

ihave had myhiker for 5 years. i dunno what "bad" reviews your reading as everyone praises them.
of course there are downfalls to a "pleated" filter vs cermanic and vice versa.
But i dont baby mine, and it hasnt clogged or broke yet. i have seen plenty of msr's go down with constant clogs and such even with silt stoppers.
my 1st filter went 3+ years before going bad,,eventhne it wasnt bad per say it was getting slow. when your used to pumping 1 liter as fast as they nomrally do when it gets hard to pump i change it.

this is the kind of h20 i nomrally have to filter out of here when im in the woods.

I have a Katadyn Pocket water filter along with two spare filters and a Katadyn maintenance kit. All told, it wasn't cheap, but well worth the money and the peace of mind. It's good quality kit.

I also have two Katadyn Hiker Pro's. One of which I bought, and the 2nd of which was a gift.

Between them, if I could only have one, I'd take the Katadyn Pocket over the Hikers.
