I second the SAS survival handbook.

 

SAS survival manual is most peoples survivale bible, It comes in a handy mini size so you can take it with you when hiking/ or in a survival scenario!

I have the large copy and the mini copy!

 

also fm21-76 will work as well.:thumb:

 

The SAS manual is one book I will not part with.

 

I like the SAS manual a bit more comprehensive, talks about building a kit and some more topics on fieldcraft.

You can download the FM 3-05.70 which is a newer version of the FM 21-76 here in the 'Survival Files' section of the forum.

I think I have an SAS manual around here somewhere. I'll have to look. What is the difference between the FM21-76 andFM 3-05.70? Is one civilian and one military? I had heard something about a civilian version that wasn't as good.

 

Don't know about the civilian version. The FM 3-05.70 is just an updated version.

I believe the DoD is trying to standardize some manuals across all branches. Makes sense, back in the day the Army would number a manual one thing and the Marines would name the same manual something different, just Red tape that made no sense, guess they're waking up now.

Hey thanks for the info. on the SAS manual, also I went to my local library and found a lot of books on survival, even an Idiots Guide to 2012 (can't believe they came out with this).

United States Air Force Search and Rescue Survival Training: Af Regulation 64-4

The Air Force 64-4 is the most comprehensive survival source I have ever found. It is well worth the money.

SAS Survival manual is the best I found so far. Also Survive by Les Stroud is really good filled with actual uses and good images.

Perfect to take with you not too heavy, but full of info

A free download is great but you cant read that under a tree 30 miles from anywhere.

Its a great reminder, because when TSHTF your mind my go blank.

alos if im injured or unconscious my family can use it too.

 

The Ranger Handbook isn't too bad either. Not as good as the SAS, though.
