This is one of those questions that doesn't have striaght answer. Speaking as professional security guard. Based on the one shot stop table from actual shootings .40 cal (97%), then .45 (96%), then 9MM (93%). As far as professional instructors .45 auto. As far a mil-surplus tipping the scales in you favor 9mm. Want to use what the police use .40 cal. As far as what I'd choose with primium hollow point ammo being used any of the three will do, edging twords the bigger sdge of the scale. "Ball" ammo only .45 ACP.

As far as what to shoot it out of if your new to handguns, I 'd be squimish about any thing single-action. That includes Glock. Get at least a double action. If you have experiance then think about single action. Of the three named choices I'd go XD. But in reality go with a qaulity make in something that fits you hand the best. That means if you can go to a range and rent as many differant types as possiable and find out what "fits your hand" the best and can shoot straight with.

I'd recommend the Glock in .40S&W. Gives more "power" than a 9mm, but smaller, lighter ammo than .45 so can carry more, while giving as much "power" or more than the .45. I carried a Glock 22 and 27 since they came out, on duty and off, and love them. I fell in love with the .40S&W while training with it, it's the best.

I don't have a .40. I don't have a use for one.I have 9mm and .45, so I have both ends of the spectrum, and don't need the middle.
I have a strong liking for a Charter Arms Bulldog .44 special. I have one that came from the factory with a fantastic trigger, one that came with a really good trigger, and 2 that came with triggers equal to my Ruger GP100, and superior to any factory S&W J or K frame.
The latter 2 I consider in need of trigger jobs.

I'm looking for a pistol in 9mm, 45 ACP, or 40mm which caliber should I get in which name brand gun, Glock, Springfield XD, or a 1911?
I say go with the 40mm, that will stop a tank. :thumb: Though, I believe it would be hard to conceal carry. :D:

Seriously though, asking what caliber and make to buy is like asking what style and brand of underwear you should buy. Boxers? Briefs? Fruit of the Loom? Hanes? You will get 100 different answers from 100 different people who will all swear to you they're right and the others don't know what they are talking about.

The thing is, buying a gun is just like buying underwear, you have to figure out what YOUR needs are, what works best for YOU, What YOUR budget is and make the decision YOURSELF.

By the way I say get the boxers, I prefer HANES. Gotta let'em hang. :thumb:

#1 choice Glock 19, You can't go wrong. 15 rounds & a perfect CCW
Here is my Glock

#2 choice Sig P250 It's supposed to have kits soon for .357 & 40 S&W as well as different grip sizes.
Nice grip & trigger but too big for CCW
Here is my Sig

Supposed to be availible in .45 soon.

I have a Taurus 24/7 Pro Compact chambered in 40. I would put it up against any of the elite brands. It is reliable, accurate and has a lifetime warranty. If you do not have unlimited funds, I would look at the Taurus 24/7 and 1911 series.

I like the 40 because it packs more punch than a 9mm and is controllable in a compact semi.

I say go with the XD in 45ACP or try out one of the XDm's that just came out in 40. The XD's are solid guns and you can't beat 16 rounds of 40 cal in the XDm. Personally I stay away from 9mm it just doesn’t have the stopping power I like.

Depends on what you want it for and what you can afford.

Mine is for home defense - 10 yard shots at the MOST. The 9mm Glock 19 with good ammo will get the job done. The other advantage is that my wife will practice with it!

I picked mine up for $450 with a good set of sites.

My second choice would be a Sig 220 in 45acp (very nice tool). But then you are in a whole new price range!

I don't see a real reason for the 40. A lot of kick, not battle tested like both the 9 and 45, and less ballistic performance than the 45.

GO with whatever "feels" best people all all different, so are there preferances in women, cars and guns, go rent them all, and see what you like. i variouse pistols in all of the above chamberings, but have my faves with the others still remain great weapons.

Glock in 9mm.

I have around 3,000 rounds through mine. I've never had a ftf or a hiccup of any kind, notta one! Knock on wood.

The only guns I've owned that have been as reliable as my Glock are the two revolvers I've owned.
