On a break open shot gun pop the barrel off. Measure it's entire length. The barrel length on a shot gun has to be 18" a rifle 16". But if you are planning on cutting either one off I would add 1/2 inch to be safe.

If you cut the barrel in any way, make sure you document it with photos or something. If it is a rifle barrel, youd be wise to have a gunsmith write on the receipt that it was so many inches long when you got it back.

A lot of people have had shotguns that were 18.25 inches and the ATF or sheriff took them and in court the barrel was magically down to less than 18 inches.

Pulled this off the web from a candian import stand point.

These are definitions:

a revolver is measured from the muzzle of the barrel to the breech, immediately in front of the cylinder; and
all other firearms are measured from the muzzle of the barrel up to and including the chamber, but not including the length of any part or accessory added to the barrel, including those designed or intended to suppress the muzzle flash or reduce the recoil, such as a flash suppressor (eliminator) or muzzle brake.

A permenently attached FS can be used to extend a barrel to over 16 inches but it must be blind pinned or silver soldered.
