Gold should be a good investment, but like others have said, don't put all of your eggs in one basket. In my area, gold would be worthless. Fuel, food, and medicine would be premium trade items. I am sure it will vary according to area, and the type of goods being bartered.
Where can I obtain Gold, silver, etc. Coins?
