Where can I obtain Gold, silver, etc. Coins?

Hey guys, could somebody tell me where I could buy gold coins, silver coins, etc. for bartering after TSHTF? Can you get them at a bank, a jewelery store, or what?

Also, how much of them should I buy and will they actually be useful after a disaster?

Silver gained 46% in the year 2007 and is currently outperforming gold on a percentage return basis.
