I'm ready to pull the trigger on a Berkey Water filter. (Unless any member(s) can talk me out of it.)

I found they have the Big Berkey for $239 on their website. Any better and/or cheaper that will be as good/better then this one? What do actual users have to say about it (pros/cons).. Please help out a fellow member...

I got my aquarain with four filters, never used at a consignment shop for $10.00. I did the happy dance right there in the store and was greatfull that I had been a member of this board, because it was from reading this board that I was introduced to these kind of filters. I never would have given it a second look or realized just how stupid lucky I was to get it for that price.

why pay that much for 1 water filter that only filters a few thousand gallons before you need another filter costing over $100 per pair.the best bang for the buck is a sawyers point one :thumb: guaranteed to filter 1,000,000 gallons

bought it three days ago. Can't believe I put it off for so long. WTF!:(
You bought the berkey?

I didn't follow the Berkey crowd only because of the complaints read here on this website. I went with a Katadyn Gravidyn, I have my own artesian fed well and pond so I feel it will suffice for my needs.

What complaints did you hear about berkey?

We have a well. It went seriously bad last fall. We bought a Berkefeld, w/4 tall candles and used it all winter.

They do a great job. They do clog quickly. You can scrub off the outer layer of D.E. and use the candles again. However we became concerned about the lifespan of the candles, seeing that they clog so quickly.

Fortunately our well got fixed. [the well driller screwed it up really bad 6 years ago when it was drilled]

We got our water tested Friday.

pH 7.7
Iron =0.01mg/L
Hardness =7ppm
TDS =130mg/L
Lead = not detectable
They had to ship it away for the Arsenic test, so we will see.

The guy doing the test sells water softeners, and he said that he had no system that could make our water any better. Our well water is the standard for what he tries to do with other people's wells.

No doubt, Berkey Water Filters are high quality, however they are way too expensive! Remember the object of the game is to purify the water and that does not require such an expensive piece of gear. I spent less than $40 on a ceramic water filter that lasts virtually "forever" providing it is cleaned and maintained according the instructions. I just ordered the actual filter, filter sock and spicot kit and then assembled my filter using two gallon food grade plastic buckets. You can read about these filters:
