Dear Forum Members,

The first topic I always look at in any Survivalist Forum is what people put in their BOB or their BOL stockpile. But what do you NOT put in, and why?

I'll start: I never put bleach and ammonia in the same storage spot at home, since, if they spill and combine in an earthquake or building collapse, the two compounds will form a poisonous gas.

Sooo...What's NOT in your wallet?

We learned the hard way many, many years ago not to put bar soap anywhere near food items. Even in a plastic bag inside a tupperware-type container, the soap smell permeates ALL food items, no matter how they are packaged.

So, for our BOBs we now put liquid soap, like Dr. Bronner's, well protected so it won't leak.

If you carry a firearm in your BoB (glock or other pistol) make sure the weapon is UNLOADED, keep the magazine in your pocket, it's amazing how easy a loaded gun can kill you without pulling the trigger.
hmmm, this kind of defeats the purpose of having a gun for protection if you have to fumble for a magazine. cops carry in condition zero all the time with some ever having fired a single shot in their entire career.

I was always taught that there is no such thing as an "unloaded gun," i.e. you are supposed to presume that every gun is loaded and to never point a gun at anything which you do not intend to kill or destroy and waste utterly.

Thus, I know I will never be carrying an "unloaded gun" in my BOB or stockpile.

Guns only work with bullets in them, and some ******* closing in on you is NOT the time to worry about inserting a magazine and racking the slide.

If you follow the 4 firearms safety rules, this shouldn't be an issue. Carrying an empty gun WILL GET YOU ****ING KILLED. end of story.

cheap dollarama matches. even the humidity and dew of a moring at 18 degress when it drops to 10 at night ruins these things.

sodium chlorate. this stuff is percussion detonated, and you dont want your bob bursting into flames all of a sudden

if you bring clacium oxide, keep it away from water, moisture, humidity, dew, water, water, WATER and above all WATER!!. anything containing water is out too. calcium oxide is hydroscopic (is that the right word??) and will not work later if its exposed to moisture.

Not in my BOB:
WATER - I do usually carry some when traveling, though
FOOD - except maybe a granola bar
CLOTHES - take up too much space
GUNS or AMMO - will be carried separately

The above are all things I have ready and would load if I were bugging out in a vehicle with a few minutes to prepare. But my BOB is small and loaded with the little survival/camping gear items that I would not have time to collect in a hurry, or things I might need if I couldn't get back home.

Somebody gave me a bladder backpack for biking. I used it one time - just water - and threw it (the bladder) away because there was no way to dry it out and I knew it would not be safe to store wet. I like my Army surplus canteens but not sure if the plastic is the relatively safe kind. I have drunk out of a slightly rusty tin canteen without getting sick. If I can figure out a way to strap my Berkey Light on my mountain bike, I'll be good to go.

Yes, but they carry in a holster, not a BOB full of other stuff. If your firearm is not on your person or in immediate control, say a murse, it should be unloaded and stowed safely.
I'm guessing you meant they don't fire a shot other than training in their career. That's true, most, probably all, leo's hope to never fire a shot in battle.

I assume you meant purse... Which is a terrible place to carry a gun unless the gun is in an enclosed holster in the purse or in a pocket designed for guns (and only used for the gun). Just think of all the things that can get into the barrel and mechanisms.

If a person carries a firearm in a BOB/purse/backpack with other loose items they are asking for trouble, loaded or not. Use a holster or gun bag for your gun no matter where you keep it. Pulling a gun out of a bag and not realizing some small item has wedged itself into the barrel makes it more dangerous than leaving it loaded. If your gun is stored/carried correctly leaving it loaded is not an issue. The trigger can't be pulled if it's in a holster or bag and little items are kept were they should be... away from your gun.
