I am looking for a scope to mount on the top of my AK. I would like to know what other people are using. I cannot spend a lot of money on it. I've looked on Cheaper than Dirt, and I am confused by the enormous number of options. Most of their offerings appear to be red/green dot scopes with 1x magnification, or reflex sights with 30mm reticule. What should I be looking for if I want to be able to shoot to 200 yards?

I have an Aimpoint on my Galil, they make good mounts for AK. I have the Midwest Industries Aimpoint forearm combo on a Romanian AK. I have also used POSP scopes on them before. I use a Nikon 6469 on my PSL.

I like the Aimpoint micro on the Midwest rail forearm. I also like the Aimpoints so take it for what it is.

I would think any of the reflex sights (is there a 1.5 - 2 power variant) or the red dot stuff would help you hit a man-sized target out to 200 yards.

Let me be the first on the thread: if you wanted precision, the AK is not the tool. I would not burn a lot of cycles looking for the perfect optics for that platform, at the expense of other, more important preps.

I have a Bushnell Red Dot on mine. No magnification, I can hit a man out to 200 well enough with it.

These scopes mentioned would work alright on a Saiga AK-47? I've been kind of under the impression that the scopes/red dot systems aren't a great idea for these weapons due to amount of recoil(red dot) and not having a direct top mount system (scopes).????

Please don't read this as strict fact, I am just trying to learn.. Would certainly love a link to a quality (while affordable) scope or red dot (or both!) options..

this is the best scope mounting system I have seen for the ak to date, pricy but I want the best. I want a scope that is adjustable and good enough for an ar or ruger mini 30, I got two buddies with those guns and I want to give them a run for their money at 300 yards, I know it can be done I already do well at that distance iron sights, any suggestions welcome.

Midwest Industries mount with a leupold delta point. No sense in putting magnification on an AK.

I have a POSP-1 a 4x Russian scope for my 74. It works well enough, but you need to adjust it for different distances. The scope is side mounted and sits offset from the furniture. As a plus though, you can still use the iron sights.

Thanks mate for helping clear up the AK being the god gun that many think it is. Ive had posters on here tell me they are accurately hitting targets at the 300m mark lol. Scoping a 47 is like scoping a muskett. If you are looking for a weapon with capabilities of mid range accuracy (500m and under) and stopping power at these ranges, the 556 is the way to go, unless you have the quid for a .30 caliber combat rifle. If you must scope a 47, a simple Halo type would be your best bet, for it is a 200m rifle regardless of what gadgets you apply.

I cant offer advice on what scope to try, but I can offer some assistance
on where to get scopes in bulk to try.
go to your local pawn shop. I go into the local ones
every couple of months or so and pickup a handful for somewhere
between $50-75 bucks. Sometimes I get mounts, sometimes not, sometimes they are airsoft, sometimes you get good stuff. In my last 3 bulk buys, I picked up 4 bushnell scopes.

Scout Scope makes a good mount that replaces the rear sight, it is rock solid I have a little Bushnell red dot and it will put 4 inch groups at 100 yards, so hitting a man at 200 is no problem

Unless you trust your life with it, I'd stick with iron sights. With sufficient practice, there is very little difference between a scoped group and an iron sighted one, when one learns how to shoot iron sights properly. Getting 2" groups with iron sights at 100 yards is really no problem.

I do have an eotech 512 ontop of my Saiga conversion. I use the scout mount to mount the red dot. I have it for faster target aquisition and not increased accuracy.

Most AK scope mounts do not hold zero. The scope mounts that attach to the side mounting lug are fine. Most that replace the reciever cover are not reliable.

To make a well placed shot, you only need 1x per 100 yards. Keep in mind, you really want to see whats around you. A scope is like looking down a tube. You are unaware of whats going around you. This is why red dots or iron sights are better.

Take a look at tech sights. They make sturdy rear peep sight for the AK that is just like the AR-15 rear sight. I have their AK and SKS sight and they work great.

Scope cover mounts that just replace the cover and don't integrate with the front sight wobble and lose zero easily. I'd second looking into tech sights. They give you a longer sight radius and work very well.:thumb: Cheap scopes cannot be relied on, in my estimation.

I have both a SAR-1 and a converted Saiga. I have a Vortex Strikefire on a side mount that Vortex makes.

They work well together.

M.I. seems to be rocking right now as for location when it was on the cover (while a Texas dog leg is great) the reach over to rack slide it was funky with in on top but a scout mount seemed to work great.we were headed to the ultimak gas tube but I got to thinking buot the heat....I shouldn't have but it changed my mind...FWIW Primary Arms has some reasonable combo's you just have to look for them.

The AK shakes and flexes so much iron sights are probably best. If your eyesight needs help like me a red dot would do the trick. Anything more on an moderate to inexpensive AK is not gonna work.

Update: Here is what I have purchased

I went ahead and bought the dust cover replacement mount from cheaper than dirt here. It fits under the rear sights and it looks like it will fit my I.O. AK well. It allows the iron sights to still be used in case the scope fails.

I also bought a red dot scope to mount. I have to work on a budget, and these looked like they would do what I want.

I will need to pad my stock to bring my cheek up higher to use the scope. I am left handed and left eye dominant. I don't believe that the side mounted scopes will work for me, but I didn't really investigate them. Running the bolt will be a pain with the scope and mount, but life is full of compromises.
