That is actually a concept in Buddhist thought:

"If you have to own something, IT owns YOU".​

How about the rule of 3s: "You can survive 3 minutes without air, 3 hours without shelter, 3 days without water, 3 weeks without food, 3 months without purpose."

For the 3 month one, I have also heard "hope" or "love" used, but I think "purpose" sort of covers those.

I remember them in reverse order and add one. 3 months without purpose, 3 weeks without food, 3 days without water, 3 hours without cover/shelter, 3 minutes without air, and 3 SECONDS WITHOUT THINKING!

Exactly.

Doesn't only mean two knives, two guns, two flashlights...

It means that multiple backups - in physical goods, yes, but also in plans and knowledge - are better than betting your survival on one of anything.

Flexibility and the ability to adapt are the most important survival skills.
