I use the good old match and striker strip to start my fires in the woods. What do you guys prefer?

I watched a video last night from "Hoods Woods" and it showed a new way to make firestarters.

One cardboard egg carton
100% cotton lint (from your dryer).
Animal tallow (lard).

Fill egg carton depressions with lint. Pour one tablespoon of melted tallow over each filled depression.

Each filled depression is considered one fire starter. I am sure you could use patrolium jelly instead of tallow. Store in a plastic zip lock bag. Use any heat source to start fire.

My favorite fire starter is a match, bar-b-que lighter or a bic. But I will be practicing with my stricker strip again this week.

the dry cotton ball will light after the first strike.

I've been experimenting with different methods my favorite is gonna be the most convenient (lighter) but I have been practicing with 'from scratch' methods, of late...

Ramona- try using Parrafin or candle wax instead of animal tallow. Animal tallow might get a little smelly after awhile. Filling up the egg carton depressions with sawdust works well too

Mini cupcakepaper filled with sawdust and covered in parafin. Makes a nice flame for acouple minutes to get things going.

I have a bunch of the fire starter logs that I have been storing for awhile, that seem to work pretty good along with a match or lighter.

Just kidding. I normally use a bic and some small twigs. But I've been experimenting with flints, charcloth, and a fire piston.

Fire stick and magnesium

water-proof matches
A brass Zippo lighter
Two bics
battery and steel wool
bow and drill
Gunpowder (works great with the lens)
parabolic lighter
boat flares
Don't have a plunger...some day...

for fuel...hexiburner blocks, cotton in vaseline, dryer lint, alcohol, candles

Per pot is by far the most fun to play with, gunpowder and sun next. But usually I use a fire stick into vaselined cotton

I have also used the bow and rock or whatever you call it, I got smoke but no fire.

I have considered the flint or the piston type have any of you tried that

The only way to go. Fire is so important that backup are an absolute.

Exactly you should always carry at least 3 ways to make fire.
I carry 5 in my LBE ... cause all my fitre making kits are small.

main way is flint and steel with a cotton ball.

( i taught my 9yr old how to make fire this way ... she even has her own flint, steel and mag block just in case ) Its that easy to do!
Of course she understands she isnt allowed to make fire without a adult present.

it's important to note that it's generally a good idea to keep 2-3 fire making tools separate from each other. If you lose your fire kit, it does you no good if you have everything together.

That said, I keep two fire steels and two lighters. One of the fire steels is attached to my knife and the other is in my fire kit. I also keep a lighter on a lanyard tied to my belt loop.
