Hello again.

I've tried to get some help here under different nick yesterday but I got banned for spaming - I guess it was because I did put link to my page in the post - I am sorry for my mistake.

Now I post the same question without any links and hope to get some answers as it is really important for me/us. Thanks in advance.

Me and a couple of my friends created a project - a list of 149 Things that we must do in our lives (I can give link on PM if someone is interested).
We want to show people that even with limited funds and other obstacles You can do amazing things. Moreover - You can make Your dreams come true.

And now back to the "I need advice" part

Our Thing 002 on the list is called: "72 hours with a Knife in a Forest".
There will be 6 of us (at this moment) and we want to spend 72 hours in woods with only "clothes on our back and a knife in a pocket".
No lighetrs, no matches, no food, no water, no nothing :p

And finally the question - what survival knife would You choose for such an event? It has to be multi-functional so we can cut wood, maybe scrape some fish, etc. It will be used for everything.

And how would You do it? You think every one of us should have the same kind of knife? Or should we choose different ones to have more varied equipement?

I would really appriciate some answers as I believe there are many Knife Experts here who can share their wisdom.

Regards :)

Really depends on your experience and what you plan to do for food. and where you are, desert, mountains, swamp, or what?

I would each pick a knife that can do something different. You will need something that can cut and split wood, for fire and shelter. If fishing you need a filet knife. If hunting a knife to skin.

Are you planning on having just 1 knife between all of you? I don't believe that would work out very well for you and completely agree with LandOLakeS that each of you should carry something different. I don't know of any knife made that will "do it all".

I recently did this myself. The best advice I can offer is don't eat the moss on the south side of the tree. Here is my results...

All kidding aside. Im worried about you. Welcome to the forum BTW. One sip from a funky water source you will need a hospital or die. Do you guys have any training, and lots of practice?

I ask only because if you did you would be telling us about you knife choice. I think its a great idea, and if you got the skillz that would be an awesome experience.

If it was me. I want a Leatherman Wave.

If you all are gonna have a different knife I'd recommend at least one of you have a bigger Swiss Army with the saw. And at least one of you have a multi-tool (would that count as a knife?). The Swiss Army saw would make it alot easier to cut figure-4 trap-sets and whatnot. Plus the steel on those is really good and would hold an edge easily through all 72 hours of constant use.

So maybe I should give You some more background.

We all were born and bred in small towns near lakes, rivers, forests (I believe backwoods would also be a good word), etc. So we know a lil bit about "spending time in forest".
I just have to add - we are no survivalists at the moment. Of course we are going to prepare before our event (we are choosing woods that we know - at least few of us, there will be possibility to find water! and some food and we for sure will let some people know where we are going to stay - including some authorities responsible for that region that we are going to stay there).

Also we are planning to divide this Thing into 3 parts: 24h, 48h and finally 72h - so we do not jump stright into deep water.

Now about knives - I think $30-40 per piece is max.

BTW: if any of You know any manufacturer or a shop that would be willing to sponsor us, even one blade, in exchange for ad in our videos (at least 5 videos about this event) and text link on our site - it would be great

What a fantastic idea! That would be so much fun. I'd put a little spin of my own by just taking what was in my pockets (which would really only add a BIC and some lint to your list) but I would hate to not have fire for 3 days if I commit to something I follow through.

As for a knife the everyone carrying a diffrejt knife is a great idea,. If unwashed doin it I'd want either a leatherman Swiss army knife or my new favorite Buck 110 which I really feel could get me through hell and back.

Good luck and stay safe out there

Saw Bear Grylls beat the snot out of a Gerber LMF II, now I heave read some threads here that are pretty negative toward this knife but he was beating the snot out of it and it just kept doing the job.

On the flip side I have had a BK7 and cant say anything bad about the knife.

I have also had a RAT 7, and by far its been the best blade I have ever owned.

But I am also a huge fan of anything Leatherman if a multi tool is a consideration.

In my opinion a 7" smooth blade in RAT or ESEE brand would be my survival knife of chioce and I actually own a RAT 3 neck knife, a RAT 7 survival knife And an ESEE Junglas large survival knife. All are awesome blades and each has its own place its more useful but they are all very capable woods blades. Only problem your not going to get any of them for the kinda change your talking about. Im not a rich guy by any means but for a good blade that I would trust my life with Im gonna spend some dough. And the idea of everyone having a diff blade is the way Id go. 1 large survival blade, 1 med survival blade, 1 small survival blade, 1 large folder w/ a saw, 1 Leatherman wave, and 1 Gerber Bear Grylls U.S.K. (has diamond shapener and fire starter)

$30 to $40 is hard to do. Save your money and get a good fixed blade. The K-bar's, Rat Cutlerly, Fallkniven, ESEE, CS SRK, CRKT Ultima, something like that. A decent knife, with a decent sheath is going to run $80+. I would also look at a Gransfors or Wetterling Hatchet. Far more versatile than a knife for camp chores, cutting and chopping.

The Buck 119 is the best bet for the money youre talking anyway this is a great idea but i would think really seriously about your water.... with todays runoff and polution problems it is unlikely youll find clean water.... and i agree with what i read earlier....you get into some bad water and you could die if not treated immediately. that aside my top three (that three different people could carry) are the the buck 119, the green river dexter skinning knife, and the Leatherman wave.

My advice is don't do it.

If you need advice on which knife to take imho you shouldn't be doing it, you're in for a very uncomfortable 72hrs.
You don't even need a knife if your aim is purely to survive.

Looking at the replies I bet your no better off now than when you asked the question, knives are very much a matter of personal preference.

If your determined to go and do this I suggest finding somewhere you can handle the knives before you buy, at least that way you buy something you feel confident/comfortable with.
