Today I did two 5-gallon buckets of pasta (1 elbow macaroni and 1 penne rigate) and I have enough penne rigate to do another and enough oats but I just need more buckets. This 12 week challenge was a great idea. It pushes me to do more.
Great Job!!!!

I have been trying to get my ass in gear to do this for a few months. I figured if I brought up a challenge to get it done, i would have to put my money where my mouth is.

Now i am doing the thing I need to take care of my family.

I am glad you are too!:thumb:

This food challenge is like P90-X for your survival pantry. Doing the challenge for 84 days will vastly increase your chances of survival in a food shortage.

Super good job guys and gals!

I don't package in 5 gallon buckets. I package in #10 can sized bags. But this week I packaged, 25 lbs of sugar, 20 lbs of rice, 20 lbs of oats and 25 lbs of assorted beans. I have no local source for bulk salt, so hopefully that gets delivered this week.

CS, thanks for doing this. Its been a while since I've added to my food storage. What I have stored is plenty for my wife and me, but we added another mouth to feed (8 months old now) and it is time to put back an additional year supply for the kiddo. You got me motivated to go ahead and just do it already!

So this weekend I ordered some more mylar bags, oxygen absorbers, and gamma lids. I already have 20 of those Lowes 5 gal buckets sitting around and I plan to fill em up throughout the Summer.

My main issue now is where to put the additional buckets. I may have to start using the garage or buy a bigger house.

Thanks for the challenge, CS! I've been working on other stuff (mostly canned food and ammo preps), but figured I better get with it... and the challenge was just what I needed.

So far, I've done this:

10 Gallons White Rice
10 Gallons Pinto Beans
5 Gallons Flour
5 Gallons Sugar
5 Gallons Salt

This weekend, I'm planning on doing more salt, sugar, flour and oatmeal.

Does anyone have a good way to store your leftover oxygen absorbers that doesn't require a food saver? Doing a couple of buckets a week seems like a great way to do it (instead of all at once)... but I can only get the oxygen absorbers in bulk.

Also, I order my stuff online... but what type of local stores sell mylar bags and oxygen absorbers?

Also, when you are packing your mylar bags, why not use the hose on your vacuum cleaner to such out as much air as possible just as you are sealing, in addition to the O2 absorbers?

The best way to deal with O2 absorbers for short term storage would be simply a zip lock back I suppose. A lot of people use a canning jar without the food saver. There is so little air in there and of that air, only 15% is O2 so that would be fine.

As far as sucking air out with the food saver, I suppose i could but that is a ton of air and the food saver should only be used on smaller packages or risk burning it out.

I would love to package my food stores all at once but I am on a budget like everybody else.

Thanks for the help sniper.

I didn't mean to suck the air out of the mylar with a food saver. I mean suck the air out with your shop vac.

I have seen a couple videos where the guy irons the bag right up to the shop vac hose, turns on the vac, and then irons upward as he slides the vacuum hose out, and it seems to work. Seems to suck out most of the air. He used O2 absorbers just in case.

i did something similar to this a few times when we had wildfires here in socal in 2003 and 2007. both times we had to evacuate my old mans pad out with him once staying in a 5th wheeler and the other time on my couch. luckly i had done something like this at the time only i used a food saver with weighted out portions and threw the food in empty ice chest. worked good cause each time i cut one open was a meal for one person. oldman ate a lot of em that time.

O2 absorber are pretty much mandatory unless you do the Dry Ice method. Vacuum cleaner just won't get the O2 out enough. The O2 absorbers finish off the Oxygen left. Have to use it. Totally worth the extra bucks.

This is for 30 year shelf life stuff though.
