which reminds me, one of the favorite personal defense items we advise in our training class for non -gun situations is a can of wasp spray. It doesn't look out of place in the office, will not be viewed as a premeditated weapon in court, and makes a great weapon to hit a couple guys at a distance..they shoot a nice solid stream many feet away and if you get em in the face, it'll change their mood real quick.

It is a fair thread to be asking about gun-less weapons, however I'd like to suggest that you need training first. There are too many people out there who buy a gun and put it in the night stand without ever having fired it at the range, or people who buy a baseball bat and think they are protected when they are still stupid enough to leave the windows on the first floor open for the rapist to crawl through, or to answer the door to the three home invaders without looking out the window first or installing a peep hole.

Good martial art training (not sport training, not fake self-defense training IE the sport MA place that says "self-defense" in their add but only teach you how to do flying kicks in PJs) is more than how to throw a punch or apply a joint lock. It is also a study in how people attack, the mentality of an attacker, mass attack mentality, low light situation, the body's physical reaction to fear, and much much more.

You have to train the brain and the body. Otherwise you might end up on your butt from doing a high kick on ice, taking the fight to the ground when there are 20 of them against you, or getting put in jail because you owned the wrong weapon.

Never trust legal advice on the Internet as to what won't be judged to be a pre-meditated weapon IE wasp spray. Ask yourself, was the poster a practicing Judge in your city? If not, don't even pay attention to the thought. The 'net is no place to seek legal advice.

Street survival courses are one thing that you may want to consider taking. Street fighting techniques are different than other martial arts training and is based off of common sense and the idea you may have to fight or protect yourself from several people.

Another thing to consider is a good tomahawk for those "close range social events." A combat hawk or tomahawk can be a thing of awesome fighting power when properly used. There are reports of men like our Daniel Boone and Davy Crockett using a tomahawk to kill or defeat 4 to 6 hostiles attacking them. Imagine a lone man using a tomahawk to defeat or kill 4 to 6 men trying to kill him!

Rottweilers. Shutzhund trained rotties.

Or if you really want to get midevil...Caucasian Mountain dogs. These are the most protective dogs in the World. You don't have to train them at all to protect. As a matter of fact, you're much more likely to need to train them NOT to attack. They will form a deep bond with their family and existing pets, then rip apart any other living thing that enters their territory.

But I'd still pick the rotty because it is much easier to train and control.

My earlier research indicates that 9mm Glock handguns with extended ammo clips are best for looters. My friends who are into guns say a 45mm using hollow points will stop someone in a police vest. I'm NRA trained, but do not have a gun at this time. I will buy a Glock. Hope this starts you off with some direction.

Good advice. The NRA does a great job in the gun training department. Gun carrying, cleaning and routine maintenance requires specialized skills and knowledge. You're so right about a gun on the nightstand. Equally important is early warning, always being aware of potential threats and if possible and legal, gun concealment or open carrying if you're in AZ or a state that allows it. Dogs and Geese are helpful. Open carrying a handgun gets my attention and I think it's a massive deterrent.

Take gas and a glass container 1 old rag and a lighter... theres that... and

Bricks knives baseball bats (cricket bats for uk people :p) anything can be used as a weapon its as simple as that heck even a pointy stick..

Gas and packing penauts strofoam makes napom..

Chain saw?? I mean who would attack a dude with that.. garderning shears.. the big pointed ones heck even a sword..

go rifle.. pistols are good and all but they lack true power take any hunting rifle.. and if it can kill a bear.. you bet it can kill something smaller..

what I would be thinking if tshtf , where would there be weapons ...police stations etc.
I guess sporting goods stores are out, but if things went crazy ,I'd case someplace out and have a plan.

Use your imagination, get creative, think about what is around you and how it 'could' be used. I'm into drag racing, I have a lot of tools that would make great weapons in a one vs. one situation, but you mentioned crowd control. That made me think of a time when a good half dozen people chased down a buddy to damn near my front door and started beating the pulp out of him. I grabbed a 10lb bottle of Nitrous Oxide and rushed to the crowd with my hand on the valve. I don't think the idiots realized just what I was holding or what I was intending to do with it, but liquid nitrous comes out of the bottle at around -150*F and the first one to rush me found out just how cold that was with a good blast of it to his face. His shrieks convinced the rest to get off my property right quick. I imagine mounting one of this on your back with a length of hose from the tank to direct flow could be what you are looking for.

i also used to live in europe ( france) but now i live in israel and its even worse.

carry as many knives as you can ( i carry 3 at any time) . i keep golf clubs in my car , and i also recommend you to invest in an ASP baton and a stun gun.

i also have a padlock that i use in my gym's locker room, on a very long wallet chain . trust me if you know how to use it its more lethal than a knife ( it have longer range , and you can even throw it in like a bolo in someone's head)

Thanks for all the replies. Some have some very good points. Nitrous Oxide I'd never thought of by myself. Thing is I have training. Weapons and hand to hand. I was trained by SF instructors so I think I got that one covered ;)

I'll get the cash together somehow to register as a hunter and buy a rifle. I'd go for a AK-47 but that's impossible - legally. God bless countries where such equipment can be owned without any fuss.

Slo, if you can own a bolt action rifle, go with a decent caliber/millimeter and make sure that it has a scope on it. I would suggest something akin to the 6.5 X 55 Swedish Mauser rifle with a decent 3 by 9 or 4 by 12 scope on it. By going with a decent scoped rifle you have enhanced accuracy almost as good as a sniper rifle and you can use the cover story that you have the rifle for hunting or competition shooting needs. Other decent alternatives depending on where you live in Europe would be the 8 MM Mauser (7.92 mm), the .303 British SMLE rifles or a good .308 Mauser rifle. Good luck over there.

Intel about your predator can be used as a weapon or in combination with a weapon.

If you know and understand your predator, you can use their own behavior to destroy them and their desire to prey on you. Turn them and their tactics into your best weapon.

Any ideas of just how one can make that work when fending off looters trying to get in your back yard/house?

Spraying them with something (NO, pepper spray, etc.) sounds best. I just need to find a delivery system that's effective against a group of 5-15 looters. Tear gas grenades would be perfect I suppose.

An organized band of looters means you are in a WROL world. Pepper spray? For an organized band of looters in a WROL? You must be joking. Seriously, you're gonna die after they get done having their way with you. No, maybe even before they start having their way with you.

Deny the enemy what they want at every turn.
Find out everything you can about them and deny and harrass them in every way that you can. Make it really expensive for them to prey upon you and make sure they get nothing of value from you. Get creative! Get really evil!

Gorilla warfare tactics.
