Weapons for urban survival

Hi everyone,

I'm new on these boards so I hope this wasn't covered a million times before. Anyways not that I haven't searched.

So besides knives, machettes, axes, bows and cross bows I was wondering what other kinds of weapons would you recommend for urban survival. Particularly I'm concerned about looters and such. I don't find bows and crossbows effective against a group of looters. Thing is I'm from Europe (yey) so owning much less carrying firearms is impossible. Legally speaking. So without getting hauled in by the cops what kinds of weapons could I use to defend my house and property.

I wish I could just go out and buy a 12 gauge shot gun and an AR-15 like you can in US. God bless your consitution. Here even military and LEO can't carry weapons while off duty. **** that. So even though I was military and I could go on deployment I still can't own a gun. I'm working on getting licensed as a hunter that's the best shot I have. Problem is it costs a ****load of €.

Anyways any ideas will be great.

Thanks, stay safe!

A wise man once said:

The Big stick carrier
switch hitter
with long ball power
Call it the Crankshaft: The stitch splitter
My weapon of choice is called- the bat-outta-hell
Boomin' em
Its big and black
Made out of aluminum...

If you can get your hands on it, it can be used as a weapon. for "groups" of people. I would suggest getting very skille din the use of a bow, Fast reloads and accuracy, as it will be your only option as a quickly reloadable projectile weapon, think LOTR Elf style. LOL.( no i am not a LOTR nerdola, just the only example i could think of as to how good you would want to try to be with your bow:) )

Yeah I was thinking something along the lines of those extremely powerful pellet guns. Also a nail gun which I already own but I'd like to get a powder actuated nail gun that's got a .22 or .27 shot load to drive the nail. Still that sucks for perimeter security.

I would recommend taking some martial arts or training to show you how to use lots of different objects as weapons. I was lucky enough to receive 3 months of martial arts training for free, and it was a ton of fun. I am not a martial arts expert by any means, but I have 3 months more experience than most people. Imagine what you could do if you committed and practiced regularly for a year or more?

To show how far training can go in place of a weapon, the instructor gave us a rubber knife dipped in ink, we were told to charge him one at a time and try to stab/slash him (it would leave ink wherever it touched.) Most of us walked away covered in ink, and he was completely ink free. One guy got the instructor with a nice little slash on the arm, a split second before the instructor disarmed him, and ran the inked blade across his face.

Good option if you can't get a hold of any weapons that you feel are satisfactory.

I'm really heavy on the firearms philosophy. I honestly believe them to be vital; urban or woodland.

My choices for weapons for Urban environments are a quality handgun (I like Sigs) perhaps a KelTec KSG12 tucked in a bag, or Ruger MKIII suppressed...

A good clip knife (Just bought a Spyderco Native) and a (for me) pair of Karambits.

Take a good self-defense course like, Krav Maga (won't take 12 years to master), do cardio training, Yoga (if at all possible) and strength training.

That's my honest recommendation

Something completely legal is a roll of quarters or something close to it.

No LEO would assume that you are using it as a weapon. But if you put it in your hand and hit someone, it is a bit like hitting like an experienced boxer. It would be more effective you were using leather gloves.

This presupposes letting them get within arms reach. The whole point to weapons is to extend the distance at which you engage an opponent. Which is why I am in love with tactical nukes. For medium to close range use, however, I would recommend a spear. Not for throwing, but to extend your reach. With a pointed, double-edged spear head on a meter and a half shaft, you control a space one and a half meters plus your arm length plus your extended stride in radius. For a back-up weapon, something on the order of a Roman Gladius would do.

Against a mob, fougass is highly effective. As are arrows. Remember, engage an opponent at the greatest practical distance, preferably after you have funneled him into an area he cannot escape from and will have difficulty fighting from. Deceit and trickery have killed as many men as weapons.

For crowds/mobs, I would think hand to hand would be undesirable until absolutely necessary.

What about a wrist rocket slingshot with a good supply of ball bearing and nails?

For me if I wanted a weapon in a Urban environment I want something that makes little to no noise. IMHO I would go with longbow or a slingshot.

I was watching a documentary on SERE school and guess what the trainee's were required to make and learn to shoot? a Slingshot. They even had to use it to catch dinner, some had more luck than others.

might suggest a hand pump yard sprayer - they hold a couple gallons of chemical, and you hand pump the pressure up....then make up your own recipe of whatever you think would best deter a group...might be some nasty smelling stuff, might be bleach, might be something flammable and then after they are drenched in it, you can offer them a light

whatever the tool remmber you are trying to cover many people with as little effort as possible..swinging a cricket bat is a lot of work and will yield far less results in a group before they take you down.

remember your history..well, we see old movies here, of castles with large bowls of boiling hot liquid being dumped on the attackers...a couple spray cannisters can cover a lot of folks, bewilder them and it's a weapon that your wife and kids can also handle.

which reminds me, one of the favorite personal defense items we advise in our training class for non -gun situations is a can of wasp spray. It doesn't look out of place in the office, will not be viewed as a premeditated weapon in court, and makes a great weapon to hit a couple guys at a distance..they shoot a nice solid stream many feet away and if you get em in the face, it'll change their mood real quick.

It is a fair thread to be asking about gun-less weapons, however I'd like to suggest that you need training first. There are too many people out there who buy a gun and put it in the night stand without ever having fired it at the range, or people who buy a baseball bat and think they are protected when they are still stupid enough to leave the windows on the first floor open for the rapist to crawl through, or to answer the door to the three home invaders without looking out the window first or installing a peep hole.

Good martial art training (not sport training, not fake self-defense training IE the sport MA place that says "self-defense" in their add but only teach you how to do flying kicks in PJs) is more than how to throw a punch or apply a joint lock. It is also a study in how people attack, the mentality of an attacker, mass attack mentality, low light situation, the body's physical reaction to fear, and much much more.

You have to train the brain and the body. Otherwise you might end up on your butt from doing a high kick on ice, taking the fight to the ground when there are 20 of them against you, or getting put in jail because you owned the wrong weapon.

Never trust legal advice on the Internet as to what won't be judged to be a pre-meditated weapon IE wasp spray. Ask yourself, was the poster a practicing Judge in your city? If not, don't even pay attention to the thought. The 'net is no place to seek legal advice.

Street survival courses are one thing that you may want to consider taking. Street fighting techniques are different than other martial arts training and is based off of common sense and the idea you may have to fight or protect yourself from several people.

Another thing to consider is a good tomahawk for those "close range social events." A combat hawk or tomahawk can be a thing of awesome fighting power when properly used. There are reports of men like our Daniel Boone and Davy Crockett using a tomahawk to kill or defeat 4 to 6 hostiles attacking them. Imagine a lone man using a tomahawk to defeat or kill 4 to 6 men trying to kill him!

Rottweilers. Shutzhund trained rotties.

Or if you really want to get midevil...Caucasian Mountain dogs. These are the most protective dogs in the World. You don't have to train them at all to protect. As a matter of fact, you're much more likely to need to train them NOT to attack. They will form a deep bond with their family and existing pets, then rip apart any other living thing that enters their territory.

But I'd still pick the rotty because it is much easier to train and control.

My earlier research indicates that 9mm Glock handguns with extended ammo clips are best for looters. My friends who are into guns say a 45mm using hollow points will stop someone in a police vest. I'm NRA trained, but do not have a gun at this time. I will buy a Glock. Hope this starts you off with some direction.

Good advice. The NRA does a great job in the gun training department. Gun carrying, cleaning and routine maintenance requires specialized skills and knowledge. You're so right about a gun on the nightstand. Equally important is early warning, always being aware of potential threats and if possible and legal, gun concealment or open carrying if you're in AZ or a state that allows it. Dogs and Geese are helpful. Open carrying a handgun gets my attention and I think it's a massive deterrent.

what I would be thinking if tshtf , where would there be weapons ...police stations etc.
I guess sporting goods stores are out, but if things went crazy ,I'd case someplace out and have a plan.

Use your imagination, get creative, think about what is around you and how it 'could' be used. I'm into drag racing, I have a lot of tools that would make great weapons in a one vs. one situation, but you mentioned crowd control. That made me think of a time when a good half dozen people chased down a buddy to damn near my front door and started beating the pulp out of him. I grabbed a 10lb bottle of Nitrous Oxide and rushed to the crowd with my hand on the valve. I don't think the idiots realized just what I was holding or what I was intending to do with it, but liquid nitrous comes out of the bottle at around -150*F and the first one to rush me found out just how cold that was with a good blast of it to his face. His shrieks convinced the rest to get off my property right quick. I imagine mounting one of this on your back with a length of hose from the tank to direct flow could be what you are looking for.
