We have 4 people in the house, 1 gallon per person per day for 30 days thats 120 gallons give or take.

Minimum I want to have stored is 100 gallons. Would really like 5 or 6 hundred but well....

Whats the best option? I thought about UNUSED plastic 50 gallon garbage cans sealed with duct tape.

I have seen the commercial 50 gallon water drums they sell but I'm cheap and want to hear everyones opinion.

Lastly storage will be in an unheated detached garage, I've heard wrapping your water in a blanket will keep it from freezing?

I cant help you on this issue, but would be interested in the responses, right now we get the 16 ounce 30 packs when they are on sale and the 3 gallon jugs, and then use them and replenish each week

No no no a thousand times no.
The plastic variety are toxic and your water will leech the poisons (release agents for the molding process) out into your water.
On top of that some cans are treated with other chemicals.
The metal ones are maybe, and I emphasize maybe are not as bad but the seams might leak.
Plastic can liners are treated with bug repellant so no not that either.

There is a product out there that sits in a bathtub or other big container like that that is just a huge water bag.
50 gallons.
They're like $25. I lied, they are 65 gal and 34 bux.
I look and see if I can find a link.
Otherwise get clean water barrels or other water containers.
Don't let anyone here talk you into syrup barrels from a bottling co.
The sugars from the syrups get's into the pores of the barrles plastic and will cause microbal issues later....trust me on this.
Unless you plan on sterilization with bleach the water later do not do used buckets.

Leave room for expansion during freezing inside
