As, i live close to the great lakes and have seen a few small island's that i may wanna decide to check out this summer i was wondering about using water filters, since i know nothing about them i wanna know if this Katadyn Mini would turn lake water from lets say lake michigan into drinkable water by itself or would i need to do something else to it first?

There is a difference between a water filter, and a water purifier. Read the description of the product carefully. If it purifies, you can drink it right out of the unit. If it filters you should boil it first if at all possible.
