Folks - if the sewage ever goes and we can't flush the toilet in a home after SHTF, how would we cope? I'm assuming my immediate neighbors would be going in their backyards which worries me about long-term sanitation, the spread of diseases etc from me having to smell it. Knowing that it will only get worse and stronger. I bought a portable potty that I can use with special bags but even this won't last forever. Is there anything I could purchase like a large bag of lime or something else that would help control the outbreak of diseases if we have to start going in a local park or deserted field? Sorry for the question. Any thoughts?

Just remember that your family's ****e and urine is a RESOURCE. Reclaim it by composting it and using it as fertilizer.

Compost thoroughly!

Do not use any outside sources as a precaution!

(Anyone who thinks this is icky, ponder it as you pick up your next produce item from China- although to be fair, they use it in a sludge.lol.).

It's referred to as "nightshade" ..... illegal to use in the US on food crops but encouraged across the border in Mexico ....... those trashy tanker trucks crossing the border from Brownsville are delivering one of the few exports to the Mexs .....

No matter where you live, treat the produce aisle of your local supermaket as a bio waste site

It's called Nightsoil. And composted correctly is an excellent fertilizer. You're from Illinois, so you should have been aware of the following:

Chicago landscaper, ecologist and urban poo-pioneer Nance Klehm took waste recycling to the community scale with her “Humble Pile” project: For three months, 22 participants pooped into 5-gallon buckets instead of their toilets and brought them to Klehm to be emptied into aerated 32-gallon garbage cans in an undisclosed location. After 11 months, the 50 garbage cans were dumped into one large pile. After another year of composting with only comfrey and some old straw, Klehm delivered a fluffy compost - that tested negative for fecal bacteria - iin 2-pound bags printed with “The Great Giveback.”

It is not illegal to use humanure for your own garden in any place that I am aware of.

Books that may be of interest to many are "Holy ****" and "The Humanure Handbook"

It's still a free country til the Obamacare troops tell us different ....... a private individual can still crap where they wish ......

But a commercial truck farmer can't spread human waste on his veggies/fruit ...... there's laws about land rotation as well ...... in the midwest the soybean/corn farmers contract big for the human waste disposal .........

well you can flush just may have to carry the water to top off the container by hand but itl work if you do

if you dont want to do that then you haveseveral options

1 outhouse/burn barrels

trench with things like lime to aid decomposition

makeinto gunpowder

ect but if you have acess to water your toilett will work you should read up on how a toilet works

Right, that's why I didn't say commercial. I trust what I do, but I can't trust that anyone else will take proper measures to prevent problems.
I can see where they would rush it to get crops out to rake in that almighty dollar.

As to O and his cronies, they can take their laws that affect individuals and compost them. :)

I have bee ngiving this some thought as well..

What i can't recycle will be dumped in a natural depression/landfill..

For privy i will either build a latrine or use the sanitary sewer that runs dow nthe street..pop the manhole cover, do the deed and call it a day....I can haul pond water to dump in afterwards or let the rain do its thing...

it all flows downhill from us....

We have a septic system but if the OP is in the city it's gonna be pretty hard to get one installed before a shtf situation as they are generaly not legal in the city and if you are trying to dig one out by hand its a lot of work. Ive been to deer camps where the guys use two 55 gallon dums

http://www.wikihow.com/Construct-a-Small-Septic-System

this is not going to last forever like a real septic system. It works at deer camp cause they only have the toilets going there. Everything else is grey water. The thing is if you load a bath tub into your barrel you have over loaded the system. If you could get your family to conserve to only flush and all other waste water goes on the lawn this could work for a while.

Compost is the best method, keeping the urine seperate using it for other things .
the out house is a second alternative and the same methodolgy lee the handeling .
But face it may as well learn to grow up and face life, learn to deal with smelly things .
If a real desaster strikes ,the luxury of clean air may only be a memory for a long time.
I deal with neighbors with horses ,and after a while you get use to it . you learn to cope.

If you have access to water but there's no running water, it sort of defeats the whole purpose. The assumption is that your running water has stopped. You don't waste stored drinking water by using it to flush the toilet.
Using your drinking water would not be smart for sure. Get some 55 gallon barrels for rain water. You can also use 5 gal. buckets hauling water from a stream, pond or lake. If your toilet flushes downhill to a septic tank this will work just fine.:thumb:
