While scrolling through Ebay I found a 50 cent compass and decided to give it a try.

I have one of those. Used it once when the needle of my oldest Silva fell off the post.
Now I carry a new Silva, an older light wt compass, and the tiny one is still attached to the zipper pull.

I think a magnetized sewing needle in your sewing kit makes a dandy backup for finding North if your main compass broke.
