I got a folding shovel in case my jeep gets stuck. I also have bottled water and some canned food which I notice you didn't list I hope you just forgot to mention it because you need food and water in your car. I like canned food because after you eat it you can use the can to boil water.

Everything I carry has to be heat-proof. The average temperature of a sitting car here in S. Nevada can reach over 175 degrees EASILY on a scorching August afternoon. And that's in the shade. I can make it for about 3 days if I was stranded in the summertime.

Regular bottled water won't survive for long periods of time in a vehicle due to the temperature changes.

they hold up for years, they taste good, better balanced than can food, and they self heat.

I use the actual military versions of these, they are damn good, and some of the highest quality available. You may sometimes find stores selling the military versions even though they say very clearly on the box "U.S. Gov Property Commercial Resale is Unlawful".

In the truck.

I keep my Alice pack in the tool box along with a tent , ground pad & bag . Also keep an sks /ammo with a six gallon water can and all my Nvis ham radio gear and antennas . The pack has all the usual items as on other pages . Truck has a thirty gallon diesel tank with a thirteen gallon aux tank as well.
Also rigged with a 600 watt inverter .

One of the most important pieces for a car kit are spare parts for your vehicle. Most roadside emergencies involve minor parts breaking. Kit should include at a minimum:

repair manual
belts and hoses
tow strap
basic tool kit
fix a flat/ air pump
small parts (sparkplugs,fuses, etc.)
full size spare tire
snow chains

The above kits are fine to carry also but it's always better to get rolling.

I also carry two five gallon buckets of ash from my coal stove. Better than kitty litter, albeit a bit dirtier, for getting out of a snowbank.

Wow, I can tell I'm really going to like this site, so many great ideas, I think I will definitely add a tent to my emergency supplies in my car, I bought a 3day preparedness kit off a website but to be truthful, I found it lacking.

Looking forward to reading more on this thread and putting together a truly comprehensive car survival kit.

I also keep a small stash of currency...one's and quarters....stores may be closed, but all those vending machines are there ( if power is still on) and they can dispense food and water.. so the small denomonatoins are bets

in the old ladies minivan is a tub with all the fluids the van takes, spare belt, hoses, ignition coil, jumpbox/compressor, cheap shake up flashlight, water is rotated weekly(mainly because she never brings it in the house) diapers, wipes and a first aid kit. (we have a 2 year old)

MRE's are usually only good for 5 years and they are dependent on low temperatures to last that long. Freeze-dried foods are much better for a vehicle that is exposed to high heat.

I see a lot of survival gear, but not a lot of tools/parts/extraction gear. In my 96 Bronco I carry the following:

60" Hi-Lift Jack (also serves as wrench)
Bucket with misc chains and tow straps
NICE tire plug/patch kit
Fix a flat
Spare Alternator
Spare Starter
Jumper cables
CB Radio
Spare belt
3 qts oil
1 qt gear oil
2 qts trans fluid
2 tubes jb weld
1 gallon of water
duct tape
couple feet of heater hose
spare bypass hose

I also usually keep my last set of plugs/plug wires as well.
