Just doing a bit of web surfing and came across this section on Pirate 4x4. The write up is detailed but basic and could be of use to those of us who may have multiple vehicles when bugging out. Mabey even used when having several famlies comming together to the same BOL. I like the Idea of hands free headset and hope I wouldn't need a helmet! However there are those of us who will be needing the use of ATV's and such and I think that this system would be very helpful. We all have diffrent situations and flexibility is key in any survival situation. Enough of my rambling...Check it out.

I practice vehical to vehical communications daily... using hand signals..well..usually finger signals...

often times swirving my car dramatically into their lane or passing them at full throttle and then jumping in front of them and slamming on the brakes...sometimes I ride up on their bumper, flash my lights, lay on the horn and occassionally I'll give me a little tap n nudge...some bumper to bumper time with my silverado on their Prius can usually get my point across and get them to stop texting while driving.

:D:

I dont know what to do. I have a nice 4x4 and want to install some sort od communication system. Just not sure what is the best. I have a Ham License and a portable Ham Radio and truethfully I think it is worthless, or maybe i just don't know how to use it properly. I want something that works great all the time, is easy to contact others, and will be great in a SHTF senerio. Advice is needed.

please be a little more specific.

Your best bet is to find a local ham to mentor you, check out your setup, and make suggestions...Unless you have specific questions, it would be difficult to explain how it all works here - knowing what you do know would help that too. Radio is a science in and of itself and for you to use it effectively (my opinion), you need to master it before you try to implement it into any SHTF scenario.

I prefer MGRS for in car. I have a 40 watt mobile radio in each of my vehicles and one at home. The best part of this setup is the fact that a $30 set of walkie talkies from Wal-Mart will communicate with it and allow for friends/family to talk while caravanning with us on a long trip.

I guess I was looking for great options other tham HAM Radio. I tried going to my local Ham Clubs. Everyone there seemed to be well over 65, and looked at my new Yaesu handheld like it was Chinese math. Nothing against Chinese. In the two clubs I went to not one person had a single clue. And if I had to hear how " my set at home has tubes in it." omg. I kind of felt I wasted my time and money on Ham. That being said. Still want to hear from people that have installed killer solutions in their cars and trucks. Pics would be great too. Still not giving up on HAM, just want to know all my options. More range, easier to use, more people use them, all that.

its unfortunate that your experience looking for a mentor turned out that way. I'm actually kinda surprised as the older crowd is usually much more willing to help the the younger crowd usually...

Keep your options open. The reality is that there is no RF based service out there more versatile than ham radio given that you have options throughout the spectrum - UHF, VHF, HF...I don't know which yaesu radio you have (I'm a yaesu man myself) but it is probably a UHF/VHF rig and that will certainly have its limitations with respect to range, etc...HF might be the better option if you are looking for longer range but it all comes down to whether learning the deep ins and outs of radio is worth it to you in your quest for SHTF comms...

Good luck!
