Ok, I know that this generally refers to a bladed weapon or firearm but to put it in an Australian context, where both of those things are more than a little frowned on, I thought I'd introduce what I recommend to those I train in self defense....a Torch
Specifically, the one I recommend is the Fenix PD30. It is 12cm long, so perfect for holding in a fist and made of high grade Aluminium. The lens end has a scalloped ripple to allow greater localised pressure if you strike someone with it. Most impressive is the output, which is about 260 Lumens (or as one of my students rated it, nerve stunningly bright), and it has a tactical mode with a half press of the end button that turns it into a digital strobe. In twilight or darker, getting a zap of this in the eyes is going to leave your attacker blind enough to allow you to run away, or disoriented enough to give you a huge tactical advantage.
In addition to the melt paint and strobe modes, there is an Auto SOS flash mode, and several lower power modes, allowing one set of batteries to last for hundreds of hours of use.
They are about $60 through a certain unnamed mass auction site
All of my family carry one, as do a number of the girls I train. If you haven't seen the latest releases of LED torches, you will be stunned with their output.
