I'd say something with a vent rib barrel, 12 or 20 Gauge. My preferrred ones- Browning Gold & BPS, Winchester 1300 & SuperX2/3, Remington 1100, Franchi I-12, Benelli. Don;t waste your money on TriStar- at Cabela's we loaned out several to employees and every one of them- pump, Auto and O/U all broke down needing major repairs.

How big is he? That's gonna be a big question as far as the gun fitting him. If you go the Browning route, there is the BPS Micro. Its smooth action, handles well, and is a good size for a kid. A good way to see if a gun fits someone is the old "hold it in the forearm trick". It works like this: with the trigger hand, lay the stock on his forearm. the But should be at the elbow and his hand should be on the grip if it fits, with his finger easily reaching the trigger.
