Iranian state TV has confirmed the Ukrainian airplane, carrying 180 passengers and crew, has crashed near Tehran Imam Khomeini International Airport in Iran, after suffering technical problems minutes after take-off.

An investigation team was at the site of the crash in southwestern outskirts of Tehran, civil aviation spokesman Reza Jafarzadeh said.

The following clip is circulating social media claiming to be the last few seconds of the flight. Judging by the fireball, "technical" problems would be an understatement...

It appears the crash did occur shortly after takeoff from Tehran. It's being broadly reported.

The plane appears to be a massive fireball completely out of control and slams into the ground in a huge explosion. If that was technical problem, it's among the most catastrophic in decades to turn the plane into a fireball. I would expect all identical planes to be grounded pending investigation of this "defect."

If I'm a betting man, however, giving the timing of this and the departure airport in Iran's capital city Tehran, with having just struck the US in an act of war, my money is on a mistaken or purposeful use of air missile defense systems. Either accident, or mis-identification, or just targeting it to test the system.

In any event, it was probably shot down and probably by Iran. The plane is Ukrainian origin and I doubt they'll be satisfied or happy over this. That makes this a much broader scale conflict.

Not saying that system was the anti aircraft missile system used (if it was a missile) but maybe it's possible that it was just as easy to make a targeting mistake when training is lacking.

If the US didn't fire any munitions then it was either knocked out of the sky by Iranian fire or it crashed due to a malfunction. I believe all US aircraft in the entire region were grounded when the fireworks started

So Iran shot their own people because they have relations with other Western states (different citizenship). Also because they were running from a possible war. Those "traitors" got what they deserved as per IRGC desire. Also this could be Iran panicking about an airplane on top of Tehran at the wrong time. But most likely they didn't want to take another chance of another load of critical military info escaping Iran as it was previously done by the Israelis with their nuclear hidden document treasure.
