Truck gun?

Just wondering what you all thought was the perfect truck gun. Long gun that is, as I have my side arm where it should be. Was going through a few scenarios in my mind and seeing how I spend allot of time away from home and I'm usually never more than a couple hundred yards from my truck I would start carrying either a rifle or shotgun in it in case I need to get home in a shtf type situation. I have several lever guns in .44 mag .35 Remington and .22 a few bolt guns and semi's and one pump 12 and a few single shots and just thought I'd ask you guys opinion before fabricating a mount for one. What do you guys think? Which would you choose?

Since you're talking about a get home gun (did I just coin a new term?), I would say the 12 ga pump and a bandolier of different types of ammo like some lead 6 shot, some 00 buck, and some slugs designed for a smooth bore. This would let you take care of any situation from self defense to feeding yourself with small game, birds or big game.

Now if you wanted a truck gun mainly for popping the occasional coyote or larger game animal you might need to kill with the idea that it might be a protection gun then I'd go for a rifle.

Rossi model 92 levergun in .357 Magnum with a 16" barrel.
If you have a Python or a 686 the rifle would shoot the same ammo.
The rifle weighs in at 4.8 pounds.
The .357 Mag ballistics are a lot more impressive out of a 16" closed action rifle than they are out of a vented action revolver.........almost 1000 ft-lbs of muzzle energy .......enough to drop a buck deer or a big hog.
The rifle was rough to start but really smoothed out after stripping apart and a good cleaning.

I bought a mini-14 ranch rifle for the purpose of a truck gun, but It was just to pretty to bang around. Instead, I keep a Kel-Tec sub-2000 folded in the console.
With the selection that you listed, I agree with Super on the 12ga and a variety of shell loads. Can you make a "universal" mount so can switch things up if neede?

I dont think i would want a rifle as a get home gun. I'd rather have a small pistol kept in the trunk that i can carry concealed on me. I would want to be invisible getting home, a rifle on my back draws attention.

Anyway, i keep a Single Six in my emergency trunk kit with both the 22lr and 22wmr cylinders. Ammo for both. There some hornady 22wmr self defense ammo i have in there too as well as some cci snake shot stuff. I find that the average person is generally more accepting of old style revolver than evil black looking pistol. This goes well if i ever have to take it out to dispatch a snake, possom or other pest.

Where I live it isn't uncommon for you to see people out and about with rifles and shotguns, so it's a non issue here.

Even in the small town near us long guns aren't an issue.

For the longest time, I kept an SKS in my truck, with a tool satchel filled with spare 20 round mags. I'm in the same kind of location as Doc, so it's not uncommon at all to have something in your vehicle. I paid 150 bucks for the SKS, so it wasn't any problem with it getting knocked around. I like the 154 grain soft point ammo and use it as my primary 7.62x39 round.

Depends on whether it has to be concealed or not.

A lot of truckers carry a takedown12 gauge pump... I think the Stevens/Savage 620 is the
one they like.

Be careful of driving around with a gun in a gun rack. I know one guy whose
vintage Model 94 got all manner of stuff rattled loose from banging around in his
rear window gun rack (it was probably offroad in his Jeep, but still...)

As a "trucker", I carry an M1 carbine in the big truck along with a few pistols.
In my pick-'em-up truck, it's the SKS.

I'm a carry permit holder and in my state that means I can carry a loaded rifle or shotgun in my vehicle as long as its not chambered so no need to worry about the police or media. Besides it will b under my back seat out of site of passers by and my kids so nobody need know I have it anyways. I was leaning towards a shot gun but I did forget to mention the two sks's I have. Now I'm thinking I need both in case the rare occasion of that dream buck stepping out in front of me. Dang it! Wish I could just mount the safe in the back and take em all with me every day. Ahhh, decisions decisions.

My Kahr CM9 is either with me or in my truck at all times.

I also have a Henry AR7 22lr, though I don't really see a point to having it in there...it's just in there because that's where it has always been. I wouldn't carry it in a situation where I was walking home, and I can't really see myself ever breaking down in my truck and needing to hunt for food. Hell, I don't even pul it out to plink with anymore.

I like the .44 mag lever gun best but my Marlin is way too nice for that.
I keep an FR-8 mauser in one truck and a shortened Ishapore 2A in the other truck. Both modified with Williams peep sights and slings. Got them when such things were cheap as knockarounds. Now everything is a F'ing collectors item!! I guess I'll have to switch them out for a couple of 91/30s (which of course will be collectible next week.)
I keep them out of sight

.44 lever at the least. Hate to be toting a shotty if engaged by a rifleman at greater than the shottys range. Especially if you've loaded up with small shot!
As you know a .44 lever has virtually no recoil, so removing the thinking part of a tree rat or cotton-tail doesn't hurt any meat.

I think there's alot to be said about having a non-media-hype, type weapon
in the vehicle.

Everything may be legal, but sometimes the hassle comes down to the cop that pulls you over right then.

Wood-n-blue just seems less threatning.

So do sxs shotguns, older pumps, and lever actions.

Just my personal experience.

Besides my CCW I keep a GP100 3inch with 4 spd loaders and 150rds as my Jeep gun. When I feel the need for more firepower I throw my SU16b with 7 mags in the Jeep. I'm currently looking for a 357 mag lever gun as a my Jeep long gun, and with the choices you mentioned I would go with the 44mag lever gun.

Th eked is to use a gun that's not very "militant" looking. If you're carrying an AR or AK, people could get to thinking that you know what you're doing, and they coulda be trouble.
I use a ruger mini-30 with the regular beat up factory stock, a half dozen 20 round magazines loaded with hollowpoints. I also carry a nondescript canvas satchel, with the spare magazines, some loose ammo, a canteen, camping water filter, leatherman, 2 road flares, $750 cash, a field bandage, and 2 handkerchiefs (very handy). For other gear, I carry whatever sidearm and backpack and other hydration stuff I have on me at the time.
