Does any one have a good source for topograghical maps.

GPS IS great, but if you loose power, or the sats go out, your SOL.

A good area map and compass is a must have in the boonies.

Any hunting/fishing store has them. You can also download maps from the gov at http://store.usgs.gov or do a google search for the myriad of places to order them.

Ive uploaded some Topo maps to my handheld Garmin and have enough batteries to outlast the GPS. Are you looking for a certain area or trying to stock up on a whole region?

Go to the USGS website, they have an on-line store, you simply point and click your way to the desired map. The interface is similar to Google maps, and when you have zoomed into the area of interest, you can click to see the map (s) available, and pricing. Shipping is inexpensive, via USPS, and pretty fast as government agencies go, ha.

Yah, I worked for them for about four years and putting corporate politics aside, their Gazetteer series is pretty good.

Those Topo maps shouldn't be trusted. I downloaded the one showing my address and it still shows an old barn and pond across the road that hasn't been there in 20 years also shows an old salt pit that been bulldozed in at least 35 years ago.

The site did state that the Topo map was from 1986. But the one pond has been gone alot longer then that. There is actually a 20 foot persimmon tree growing in its spot.

i'm looking for a topo map for my backpacking trip to western north carolina. i checked out the USGS website, but they have mutiple maps...not sure which one to get...http://egsc.usgs.gov/isb/pubs/booklets/usgsmaps/usgsmaps.html

That is what I was going to say. It is great and the maps now are free and you can print them out now.

I found a great topo "atlas" style map for PA at Bass Pro Shops. It's atlas sized so a little chunky to carry around but great for reference. It also had trails and some other info on it.

I use the Mytopo.com for my trips in the Rockies every year. I also have used the National Geographic maps which I do like the best! Check out the NG maps for your area. Otherwise make your own at mytopo...

Delorme and Benchmark make topo map books of the states that i have come to love for thier detail especially BENCHMARK MAPS, they show things in thier map books that Delorme misses.
