Anyone seen the news that Hiroo Onoda, from Japan, has died?
He was the man who did not believe that Imperial Japan had surrendered in 1945, and did not come out of the Philippine jungles until 1974.

His commitment to cause was unbelievable and his tenacity is to be admired, especially by a community such as this.

He was living it- respect.

Check out his story- makes for an interesting read.

He was not the only one, and in fact, was not the last one to be captured.
He was a humble man, and in his way, paid for what he did- whats a few murders among enemies?
Trouble was, he never was able to assimilate back into the real world.

Respect what he was able to do, not necessarily why he was doing it- however, I think a World War would be a pretty good reason, and he may have laughed at our little preparations for a bit of flooding or a snow storm?

If the so far mythical teotwaki ever happens, there will be some people here who will be living in their cave 30 years after things return to normal.

As the late Mel Tappan said "Survivalism attracts more than its' fair share of nuts."

B.S.He was a Japanese brainwashed fanatic who would have been thrilled to butcher you and spit your kids on a bayonet while his buddies raped your wife. They perpetrated some horrific crimes even before the start in `39.
Respect?? How about the Nazi butchers like Mengele who escaped to South America, all the while believing their cause was just.Respect them too?
Give your head a shake.

Hiroo Onoda has never been implicated in any war crimes. Comparing an honest soldier who went to extremes--and survived, as is the purpose of this board-- for his country to Joseph Mengele is absurd.

YOU WANT TO MAKE A HERO OUT OF A person that swore he would kill you if he got the chance and probably killed lots of innocent people in those 30 years
You would make the best enemy- not going to kill your enemy?
My respect is for a man who lived in a constant survival situation for 30 years.
If it was an American who did it, he would be hero to you all, still a dumbass, but a respected dumbass.
War is war, and orders are orders- he followed his.

You can (should) respect your enemy.

To do otherwise is foolish.

I ****ed people off by telling them that if I'd of been born in Iraq I would of been fighting us.

Accidents of birth.

He originally was going to surrender until he found out his mother in law had moved into his house

He made the easier choice!

I know a guy who fought the japanese hold outs until 1949. He started fighting the war in mid 1940 against the germans.
The Japanese levels of cruelty to there own men was only exceeded by their cruelty to EVERYONE else. I find it hard to respect mindless murderous fanatics.
