Thermal Setup

I'm planning a new rifle for my thermal optic. So it will be my outdoor night time goto gun. I'm thinking DDM4 V7 with 18" barrel. Engagement would be over open ground up to 300m. I was going to go AR10 ( the thermal is rated for .308 recoil) but I thought AR15 might be better for lighter weight and quicker mobility... and I don't want to risk .308 recoil on the optic...since I cant really keep an inventory of multiple $6k thermals.

What do y'all think? What is the ideal night rig to run thermal on?

thanks in advance for your thoughts

A muzzle brake would greatly reduce recoil. Add suppressor, very lil recoil at all.

A grendal would give you the energy on target, similar to a 308. At least close enough for the girls I go out with. At 300m, it would be a chip shot for a grendal.

interesting. muzzle break is a good idea for the .308. I'm staying away from more exotic or unusual calibers. I've simplified it to 3 rifle and 3 handgun calibers in inventory. Although I'm seriously considering a .243 barrel for my TC Encore.

A suppressor would be a great idea, not only for recoil but for flash and noise. Flash especially since this is a night gun.

yeah- the cans get you on the top of the ATF list though right? aren't those on their way out? like 12mos waiting period? soon they will come around to collect them?

You can get a flash can that will all but elminate the flash and redirect muzzle blast to the front..

i've seen em in action on '47's to great effect durign nighttime firing...

I agree with the previous suggestions, 6.5 Grendal or 7.62x51mm (.308).

To reach out to 300 yards, you'll need something with punch. Those rifles will do it.

What I did to tame my AR10 beast was add a Whitt Machines compensator, a Kynshot reciprocating buffer (replaces original buffer with a spring-loaded one, helps a LOT!) and add in a Mako GL Shock rubber cushioned, recoil-reducing reciprocating buttstock.

Those 3 things reduced my recoil from worse than a 10 gauge shotgun (3 shots, bruised shoulder for a week) to a slight bit more than an AR-15.

As others have said, a silencer / suppressor in place of the Whitt MRE (Muzzle Rise Eliminator) would probably also help recoil, muzzle rise and of course, blast volume.

That being said, you won't need a tax stamp / permit from the gubmnt to buy the Whitt Machine muzzle brake, like you obviously would need to buy the silencer. Best to get a lawyer, form a trust and move forward with the legal hoop-jumping from there. There are companies that specialize in that process to assist you with every step (silencer central is one of them, if I recall the name correctly).

Hope all that info helps.

Also practically speaking, after zeroing & testing my rig (which also has a bipod up front), shooting from a prone position at an outdoor range that allowed targets at 25 yds, 100 yards & 300 yards, using a Vortex Diamondback 4-16x42 scope, 300 yards is a LONG way away. The target size is VERY small. I used full-sized silhouettes and they appeared to me to be smaller than a lead pencil tip (not the eraser, the point end).

I would venture to guess the NV scope doesn't magnify as much as my scope, right? So, practically speaking, maybe 100-150 yards might be your effective range.

Your screen name is Ohio_Patriot. And you own at least one gun, right?

You are already at the top of the Fed's list, brother. ;)

Yes, the wait is 12 months give or take. I'm at about 11 months on mine, the one I already have on my rimfire guns was only 6 months, I was allowed to pick it up on Jan 2nd 2021.

Will they collect them? Just like our guns....they can try.

I would suggest you just pay the fee and get it in the works. The can is an EXCELLENT tool, it makes just about everything better, whether you go subsonic or not.

Speaking of which...300 BO could get you to 300 meters, you can run it heavy and subsonic or go lighter and get velocity. Might be an option.;)

I like to think I'm only mid tier on their list. Maybe I should change my screen name to Ohio_Commie or Hunter's Buddy...that will protect me.

Yes sir I agree with this!

I had a 5" flash can on a 11" barrel and it did wonders! Without it, you needed FRC's LOL

Any "quality" flash suppressor will get you in the area of 95% muzzle flash reduction.

I have this one a 14.5" AR and works great.

And this one on my AR.308.

your running thermal. No matter what you put on the end of the gun you are still going to heat the air in front of the gun for a second BUT you probably will never see it as the gun will rise in recoil. Your off eye is gonna be closed and the night vision in your shooting eye is going to be shot anyways due to looking through the thermal..

Thanks for that info. Question about the Mako stock. Recoil-reducing M4/AR-15 Stock - Black
Is it just the rubber butt pad that reduces the recoil or is there something else?

It is both the large rubber pad plus the recoil spring inside the stock. It's not 'springy' feeling, it's very solid, but it does move when you shoot. It helps absorb maybe 30%-50% of the felt recoil.

The KynShot also reduces recoil by about 25%-30%, and the Whitt compensater, maybe 20% more. As I added each accessory, I test fired the rifle to check results.

When I first picked up the rifle and test fired it at a range, a guy in the next lane over was using his new SA M1A rife, also chambered in 7.62x51.

We each looked over at each other's rig and decided to swap for a few rounds. We'd both already fired a few from our own rifles, previously.

When I tried the M1A, I was shocked how comfortable it felt. The look on the other guy's face after just ONE round on my AR10, however, was one of shock & horror.

He asked, "How do you SHOOT that thing?"
Because of the excessive, painful recoil. It literally was harsher than a 10 gauge shotgun.

Later that day I began my research and discovered those 3 items I listed above, that became shoulder-savers.

Run a capture spring.
