President Donald Trump is so fond of British Prime Minister Boris Johnson that he gave him his private cell phone number. The British pol, meanwhile, has praised Trump and cultivated Trump aides such as Stephen Miller, whom he’s privately met and offered writing tips.

“The Prime Minister spoke with President Trump, who congratulated him on the result of the General Election,” a spokesperson for the British prime minister's office said in a statement.

“They discussed the huge importance of the relationship between the UK and US, and looked forward to continued close cooperation on issues such as security and trade, including the negotiation of an ambitious free trade agreement,” the statement continued.

A White House spokesman later said the two leaders “reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthening cooperation on a range of issues, including the negotiation of a United States-United Kingdom free trade agreement.”

Let's imagine for a second that you're right. Read the headline: 'US withdraws its leadership'. Which means that, in the UK for probably the next 10 years, the US will have an ally which is (re-)taking its own place in the world, rather than being run by the weak-willed pacifists in Brussels and Berlin. Johnson will be PM for longer than Trump will be President.

What leadership role are we withdrawing from?

In United Nations lingo, "leadership" is simply the country who gets stuck with the bill. If refusal to pay for all the pigs at the trough means withdrawing from leadership, that's a good thing.
