While doing research on the Maunder Minimum (not looking for any link to climate change at all...i promise) I came across this paper written by John E. Beckman and Terence J. Mahoney.

The article caught my attention due to its age. I often like reading current event books...but 10-20 yrs later just to see how accurate predictions are. Its like finding an old newspaper. Well, this particular publication was penned in 1998.
In it, the writers give a basic introduction to what the Maunder Minimum was/is and talks about how the research was done in order to discover it. It also discusses how they did a 30 year experiment of other stars or similar age, size and intensity. In this research they found that "Maunder Minima" also happen on these stars and they stay in a state of minima for around 20% of the time.
Finally, at the end, the writers talking about how they themselves are not sure that this has anything to do with global warming (the term climate change had yet to be inverted at the time), but they did draw this link to the fact that the Maunder Minimum coincided with an era of colder weather. They also warn of jumping on the greenhouse gas bandwagon. Basically, the writers call climatologist to nearsighted. They think that a few decades of records make their science more relevant, trumping hundreds of years. Even in 1998 they warn of scientist leaving the field of astrophysics in order to follow the money and grants being given to climatologist.
I didn't know what the Maunder Minimum was until joining SB. I think I read about it in Snowie's thread (I could be wrong but i think this is it http://www.survivalistboards.com/showthread.php?t=293254). If you're like me, and wanna know more about the topic, and recent minimum do a search on Dalton Minimum, Maunder Minimum and Spörer Minimum. The Dalton Min was the most recent. This happen in the early 1800's. These seem to be on a 200ish year timeline.
