I would like to share my story. I have been working towards this one way or the other for 3 yrs.
It started with looking for land on water in a fairly remote heavily woods area.
I found fairly large tracts of land from 40-300 acres that looked good.
I needed access to year round road for kids school/ grocerys etc
I needed electricity. My wife said its a must!! ( looked into solar and to provide even half of what we currently consume was like $40,000 and had long term on going costs such as batteries and any repairs)

It seemed futile the cost of solar etc was just to much!! So one day the wife says " why not look at land that already has a house with electricity" and so the search began.
WOW now we were going places..We found lots and did comparisons and finally found what met our criteria.

Our criteria was a decent 3 or 4 bedroom house with acreage consisting of mostly bush on or very near water, with school bus for the kids and no more then 30 mins from civilization so we could work and the road to the place had to be year round access as we were looking in northern ontario and the winters are snowy and cold!

Ok so our current home is on 1/2 acre, rural with woodstove in house , hand pump in well, our preps and things ( fire arms, first aid , lanterns etc etc etc)
you get the picture. Our current home by the way is fully loaded with modern conveniences such as natural gas, sewer, city water etc just on the edge of a small town of 250 people in complete farmland and about 20 mins away from larger centers and 40 min from cities.

WE HAVE SOLD THIS LAST NIGHT AND PURCHASED OUR HOMESTEAD!!!

This is our homestead :

It is located 700 miles north of our current location and is located in northern Ontario.
It is 150 acres of land with a 4 bedroom house, 2 bath, two story with basement, 3 car garage, huge barn and 3 outbuildings.
the acreage consists of 3 acres of lawn around house, 47 acres of pasture and 100 acres of bush.
The house has all amenity's such as electricity, well, septic, high speed internet, phone, year round road, school bus pick up, oil/wood combination furnance (3 yrs old),
has all new windows/siding etc
The property has 9 lakes within 1 mile of homestead. Some of these lakes are 100 acres to 1200 acres in size and all contain fish. ( northern pike and pickeral (walleye), and some bass and trout in local streams.
There is a 1200 population town 5 miles up the gravel road, a 8500 population town 20 miles away etc. In a 40 mile radius there are about 20-30 thousand people within 1.6 million acres of forest. compared to my current location in a 40 mile radius with a population of 800,000. In my mind thats less people using resources and less looters etc!
The wildlife consists of white tail deer, moose, rabbits, bears, ruffed grouse, sharp tailed grouse, partimigen and spruce hens. The lakes are full of fish. All of this wildlife can be found right in the forest of the homestead. My land borders up to the 1.6 million acres of government ( CROWN) land. Crown land is gov ment land and we citizens have full access to camp, fish, hunt, atv, and cut the wood for firewood access that we want.( as long as firewood cut is for personal use. You cannot sell it for profit)
This is basically remote area in northern Canada .

I feel real good about this. It is going to be a great place to raise the kids with lots of room to explore/atv/ hunt and fish.
And if the SHTF it has awesome potential as it is
Remote, lots of water, lots of game, very few people really. and again did I say remote? lol
There is enough info her some people in Ontario might have a pretty good idea where it is but thats ok. A million acres is a big area LOL

Thanks for reading this..I just wanted to share ( brag) LOL I am very excited. We will be moving in 6 wks.

Congratulations. :) I hope you love it!

I have also been looking, intermittently, for a good piece of land with a house in 'northern' or northwestern Ontario. Imho it will be one of the best places in North America to be - already bunked in and hunkered down, used to the weather and environs, well stocked up, if the SHTF. I am so happy for you that you found such a place! And you are very right - it is a great place for kids to grow up.

Good bargains can be had there still but we are so far away it is difficult to get up to see them easily. I have my thoughts on good towns/areas to be in ... I do hope we can find the ideal place there too before it gets really bad.
