Witch of these is the best all around bullet i say its 7.62x39 because it packs a good punch also has more stopping power at range than the 223 or 5.56x45.The 223 muzzle speed is at about 3000 ftps the 7.62x39 can get as fast as 2300 ftps but most of the time its cheap surplus ammo that can be as slow as 1900 ftps making a big change. The 308 has great stopping power good range but you can't carry as many with you.
but with that said my top two rifles are dawoo and g3 both are very good rifles.

Personally, why limit yourself to one of those calibers? They are like "tools". Each caliber, specific to a particular job.

Procure a rifle (or Rifle-s) that fire each of those calibers. Then you will have the firearms and rounds for "mission specific" uses.

Craig is right, you're comparing apples and oranges. The .223 doesn't have anywhere near the range or power of the .308, but the .308 is much heavier, bulkier and considerably more expensive.
Assess your needs, then arm yourself accordingly.;)

You may not always have the time or opportunity to run home and grab the appropriate gun. Arm yourself with the gun that can best handle any situation that may come up. That being said the .308 easily outperforms all the calibers you listed.

Its hard to imaginbe a PAW scenario where the bullets are flying and you wish they were say 308 instead of 556 or 7.62x39.

MY point is all would suck to get hit by. Go with your comfort zone and what's available.

Does anyone ever use a 30-30 anymore? My dad kept one in the corner of his closet for years and we used it for target practice.

Oh and sorry didn't mean to railroad your thread here.

Yup, have a 336RC sitting in the safe. I would not feel under gunned rolling out of the house with it one bit. If you want to see a sweet 30/30 take a look at a Yost-Bonitz 30/30 Guide Gun.

None of those would be military rounds if they weren't effective.

With the 5.7 save yourself some money, it's just not worth it, it doesn't really have much more knock down than a 9mm so financially it's not worth it.

Comparing .308, 7.62 x 39, and 5.56 x 45 (military version; confused with .223) is like comparing apples, oranges, and cherries. Each is unique and has its own advantages and disadvantages. .308 Winchester is a powerhouse, it'll drop somebody with no problems. However, it's a rather expensive round, and in a SHTF situation, you might have a hard time acquiring it. 7.62 x 39 is the standard in most third world countries. It's a good cartridge, but like the .308 Winchester, you might have some difficulty acquiring it in a SHTF situation. 5.56 is plentiful. In a SHTF situation, you'd probably be able to find a lot of it, as it is the standard in practically all Western countries. However, you might need to shoot somebody multiple times with the 5.56 in order to stop them.

I have firearms in both .223/5.56mm and 7.62 x 39 and have plans to acquire a .308 in the next couple of months. This way I'll have all bases covered.

.308 is not much more expensive then the .223 and the 7.62x39 these days.

It is around here. I can pick up steel cased .223 or 7.62 x 39 for cheap, but steel cased .308 is nowhere to be found. The only option for .308 ammo around here is the brass cased stuff and that is more expensive.
Don't know where you looking but I am able to find many sources for cheap .308 steel cased ammo in stock.

brown bear 500rds in stock

wolf 500rds should be in stock in 2 days

Sportsmanguide has it ready to go in stock on the 500rd orders.

Brown bear is about .37 a round if you got the membership. You must be lucky as hell if you can find in stock 7.62x39 brown bear for cheaper.

I don't order ammo through the mail, because I'm usually at school most of the day and I don't have anyone who can sign for it on my behalf.

The last time I bought 7.62 x 39, I paid $6.00/20 rounds.
