I am so disappointed in Texas Govenor Rick Perry. He has been trash talking the Stimulus Bill and publicly stating Texas did not want any of it.

I suppose everyone has their price:

Rick Perry accepts Texas' share of stimulus, with reservations

AUSTIN – Gov. Rick Perry formally accepted the state's $17 billion share of the federal stimulus package Wednesday while pointedly voicing his opposition to the concept.

"I believe there are better ways to reinvigorate our economy and believe [the stimulus bill] will burden future generations with unprecedented levels of debt," Perry wrote in a letter to President Barack Obama certifying Texas' request for the money. All states must pledge that their share of the $787 billion package will be used to promote economic growth and create jobs.

Most of the money will be allocated along established formulas for existing state grants and programs, but some funding will be allowed for new and innovative programs that must be approved by federal agencies. The money is earmarked for education, transportation, health and human services, and extension of unemployment benefits and health insurance for those recently losing their jobs.

A special House committee will meet Thursday to begin dissecting the complex legislation and what it means for the state budget. But the state must act quickly, assessing transportation construction projects that can be started within 120 days, as the federal legislation requires.

Perry has vocally opposed the stimulus package, saying just this week that Texas should "look a gift horse in the mouth."

He stated in his letter that Texas would not use the money to expand government programs or take on projects that would require new state money after the federal funds have dried up.

Personally, I'd be pissed if he didn't take it and it went to some black hole like California.

If I'm gonna pay for it with, blood, sweat, and tears, Texas better get something good out of it. I say a 40 foot high wall with Sniper towers every 300 yards that lines the north-side of the Rio Grande river.

Any objections???

the only good coming ot out him taking it will bew an extension of unemployment benefits for those laid off recently.

Still, I was really hoping that he would deny it and give Texas some leverage when telling the Feds to shove it.

I think a bunch of that money as well as lost jobs could be made up if Texas allowed Casinos like Oklahoma and Louisiana have. We already have Horse and dog tracks, bingo halls and lottery tickets. Texas loses a ton of potential revenue to OK and LA.

I think it was mandated that the states were compelled to take the money, they had no choice.

I could be wrong....but I thought I'd read that somewhere.

I think you are right, Belladonna. Gov. Sanford (SC) absolutely hates this and what it will do to our country. He wanted NO part of it. In steps James Clyburn (D,SC) who had a provision included that said if the governor said no then the federal government could make them take the money. Basically, the federal government telling the states what they will do.

This is my understanding of what took place. Hope I'm not wrong.

Obama also met with the mayors of major Cities regarding the stimulus money. Was that an attempt to circumvent the state govenors in case they refused it?

I know Mayor Bill White in Houston (or as he is known Sanctuary Bill or Red-Light White) would be totally $hit-squashed if he couldn't get his grubby little liberal scrot-pullers on his fair share. I think there was a clause in the stimulus that allowed state legislatures to vote to override the governors in their respective states.

I have a feeling he wasn't given much of a choice in the matter. Much like the banks were forced to take the money for the TARP funds.
Seriously people...... there was no choice in the matter.

Our governor in Wisconsin would have been first in line to grab the cash but the asshat wasn't big enough to move Arnold out of the way.
