TEOTWAWKI - How will you know?

What are your clues that the end of present times has begun?

Someone asked in another thread what 3 things would you do first if TEOTWAWKI happens. Got me to thinking about how I would know about it. It might take weeks before I realized the people I meet were real zombies and not just ordinary folks.

So my list that the EOE is here.

1. The news breaks into regular TV programing with a special news alert. "The end has happened", "Film at 11".
2. Republicans and Democrats agree that it was all a big mistake and shut the government down.
3. Walmart announces a special "End of the World" sale.
4. Dog and cats start living together.
5. Women suddenly become interested in living with a smelly old hermit in the middle of No-where.
6. On my twice monthly trips to town I notice that the streets are deserted of people and I have no trouble with parking close to the grocery store.
7. The number of people offering me ways to reduce my credit card interest rates or have me donate to the transgendered State troupers morale fund have dwindled away to none.

So for everyone else, what is the signs and clues that will convince you the end has come?

When Your Family Who Never Communicates With You Do

And everybody who is not your friend tries to be. When the various government agents come door to door with lots of questions and you have no answers. When the network TV news starts putting up really ugly talking heads to talk about nothing in importance. When various special TV programs are brought to you by your friendly FEMA people. When you start to see lots of strangers in town. I will think of lots more later. Thank you....fun thread. HB of CJ (old coot) :) :) :)

How about when Republicans and Democrats both throw out a big chunk of the 4th amendment. Just saying.

Honestly unless it is an EMP, I think most will try to carry on. Even in the great depression, life went on. People starved to death. Multiple families moved in together. It would get hard, and violent for a while, but I think people would eventually buckle down and do what needed done. Not that it will be smooth. It would be ugly violent and bloody.
But if it came down to erol, it would be either instantly, or it would take weeks for everyone to realize that all the water baling won't save the sinking ship.
So basically, I have no freakin clue.

So my list that the EOE is here. Added some answers for fun. :):

1. The news breaks into regular TV programing with a special news alert. "The end has happened", "Film at 11".

If I can see it on the news then its not over unless its zombies time. :D:

2. Republicans and Democrats agree that it was all a big mistake and shut the government down.

What those to douches actually doing something together, never going to happen.

3. Walmart announces a special "End of the World" sale.

Happens every other week where have you been? :)

4. Dog and cats start living together.

It already has happen, and we humans are better for it. :D:

5. Women suddenly become interested in living with a smelly old hermit in the middle of No-where.

aka Farming

6. On my twice monthly trips to town I notice that the streets are deserted of people and I have no trouble with parking close to the grocery store.

Town moved to new location did not tell the hermit on the mountain about it. :(:

7. The number of people offering me ways to reduce my credit card interest rates or have me donate to the transgendered State troupers morale fund have dwindled away to none.

Now that could be apocalyptic may have to keep an eye one it.

Power out for more than a week is a good start.

Facebook/Tweeter goes of line.

The Rapture? If a whole bunch of people suddenly disappear while some politician starts becoming VERY popular, I think that'd be worrisome...

More seriously, the way I see it, TEOTWAWKI probably won't happen overnight or without warning. Destruction on a smaller scale, like a storm or terrorist attack, yes, that could take anyone by surprise. But if it's big, there'll be a buildup, or a collapse that will take days, weeks, maybe even years. So I watch the news, I read the paper, I look at this board and others; if something starts to happen, I hope I'll know about it. And be flexible enough to adapt.

On the flip side, if the power just goes out, or my emergency alert radio snaps on and starts shouting a warning, or the ground begins to shake: Well, THOSE will certainly get my attention!

I recall during one of Mt. St. Helens eruptions, waking up to find everything coated with ash and ash slowly drifting down. At first my just awake mind interpreted it as snow. It was surreal. For a short while it felt like the end as I knew it. Several earthquakes through the years have been interesting events also.

Unfortunately power outages have happened so many times that I would not even begin to be alarmed of a greater disaster. It would take some more information.

Politicians getting popular and vast amounts of people ending up disappearing is fairly standard historical condition. No Rapture needed. :)

1. An EMP. All electronics stop working, the grid is down, etc. TEOTWAWKI for sure.

2. Nuclear war.

3. I'm not sure. I watch a number of indicators of what's happening in the world, but none of them are absolutes.

For instance, I watch the dollar, gold and silver, the stock markets, commodities like copper, unemployment (the real rates, not the crap the government spews out), and so on.

But I don't really expect a colossal collapse full of noise and fireworks; every time we've had something like that the government intervenes, and I believe most people would wait and expect it.

Slow motion collapse? Quite possibly--I often think we're in it.

Other stuff like a pandemic are possible, but unless such a pandemic swept the country in 3 days....

It would, as usual, depend entirely on the scenario.

In some situations, you will know because you have been watching the event coming for two years or more.

In some, it will be a bright flash of light over the horizon (if you are lucky it will be over the horizon).

For some, it will be the riot that spills into your street.

Heck, with the state of the world today, I would not dismiss the dead rising and feeding on the living Walking Dead style....and dang it, I think I just got a really twisted idea for a Gangnam Style rip off.....

Most of it is pretty obvious stuff...

Ground shakes, and dust builds until daylight becomes night.

Everything electronic stops working

Power shuts off followed by amazing auroras that I can see south of me for miles

A loaf of bread costs me $20

Top government officials either rush to leave the continent, or the world altogether

Top wealthiest people in the world do the same as above

DiseaseX covers the globe and people become symptomatic around the world within a few days of each other.

Stuff like that...

Other stuff, the things that happen slowly over time are a little harder to see. I think this is how it's really going to happen unless a natural disaster like a CME or pandemic hits first.

Those with power will continually turn the heat up slowly so we don't jump out of the pot. Once we realize the water is boiling, it'll be to late.

Waters steaming now... can't you feel it???

Well being at ground zero for a dramatic civilization ending event would likely be a clue, albeit a short duration realization one. :)

However for many types of things I think a progression of reported events would be necessary. If your source of news is disrupted it could be difficult to know how great an extant a problem might be. It reminds me of the grounding of all aircraft just after 9-11. I can remember how empty the skies were and how quiet it had become. Without having any news I might have jumped to the conclusion the world had something bad happen.

Once communication breaks down it would become very hard to know the extant of any disaster or its likely duration.

What makes you think that TEOTWAWKI hasn't already happened? Seriously, with a world economy this large, it takes a long time to go "splat" after we dove off of the fiscal cliff.

You think we're still enjoying the kind of freedom that our founding fathers established? Think again. (Ever hear of the Patriot Act?)

You think you still have freedom of speech? Just see what happens if you decide to tell the world what a conservative Bible type might say about homosexuals or muslims.

It's already happened. Kinda like an automobile accident happening in slow motion. Impact has happened but there's a LOT of crumpling left to come and a lot of damage remaining to present itself.

14. Joe Biden elected President

You know everyone talks about the end of the world happening via earth quakes, tsunamis, zombies, alien invasion, volcanoes, EMP's, etc.

Personally I lean toward something stupid like Joe Biden spilling his can of Mountain Dew on the Nuclear Missile Launch Control Panel.

LOL!! I had to laugh when I read that but I only wish it were as impossible as it would seem to a reasonable and rational person... Seems like it's always the stupid stuff that gets me in the little things in life. Might just as well happen that with with big things, too. :-O

I believe it will be easy to know when TEOTWAWKI has begun. It will be when many banks start to fail. Unemployment rises and remains high. The Federal government will start to rescue banks and spend all their time reassuring us how the economy is improving steadily despite much information contrary to this. The price of real property falls drastically. Money will be created out of nowhere by the Federal Reserve and commodity prices and basics like food and gasoline get noticibly more expensive. The stock market gets irrationaly high and becomes erratic and unstable. The number of people on food stamps and other forms of welfare increases substantially. People accepting lower pay and part time jobs in order to survive. Bankruptcies and reposessions will rise. More and more people getting interested in self sufficiency because they begin to realise the vulnerability of the system. More interest in guns for self protection and more government efforts to curtail private gun ownership. Concerns about terrorism mount and government insists many violent acts are not acts of terrorism. More government intrusions in personal privacy. Blatant acts of government corruption and denials from higher officials of knowledge of said corruption. Government statistics will become increasingly distrusted. Money printing 'wars' will become more common with the major currencies around the world. Once prosperous and stable regions and countries will become financially stressed. Pensions and savings will become at risk. Prices of precious metals (inflation hedges) will rise and become unstable. Unbridled greed and speculation in banking and big business will be the norm. 'Creative' bookeeping and accounting go unchecked. Numerous 'hot' spots of political unrest around the world and many small wars and acts of piracy. Weather extremes and natural and manmade disasters will play a role. New and mutated viruses and bacteria will become a threat. Infrastructure will deteriorate, there might even be dangerous occurances like major bridges collapsing (this is a little far fetched but it could happen). Major divides in political thinking and a widening gulf between the haves and the have nots.

So you see, there is no need for concern. As the day of reckoning gets close, it will be a cinch to recognise and tell when it is happening. No need to worry at all. This will likely only happen generations from now down the road.

Well now that you put it that way I feel relieved. Business as usual. :)

Problem with all the signs of societal rot is the shear tendency for things to keep moving. The inertia of 7 billion people all going about their lives tends to ensure that. If you ever get a chance to see the Modern Marvels series it can be illuminating in that regard. The numbers are staggering and mostly incomprehensible for the production of things.

I really expect it will take a mega natural disaster affecting the whole planet before you see the march of humanity cease.

All kidding aside, I'm keeping an eye out for a major (cataclysmic) economic shakeout centering around The Dollar, something that develops too quickly and gets too big for the PTB to slow down. Won't be much any of us can do at that moment but try to drain our wallet, debit and credit cards on food and fuel as quickly as possible. This would also be a great time to NOT be on a Carnival cruise making a port call in Jamaica,Belize,Honduras,Mexico, etc.;)

Bellyman is on the right track, but I believe it is even more subtle. It was 8 years ago when I first said we must be in end times because there is NOTHING NEW. All facets of the human condition have been explored, written about, investigated. We are the same as we were 5,000+ years ago. Times and environment change, but humans do not. Everything is being recycled, movies remade, book plots regurgitated over and over. TV has deteriorated in electronic smut. People keep looking for diversion and amusemet, but we have been there and done that. There is nothing new, we are at the end and it is time to erase and reset.
