Specifically Newzealand white rabbits. I found three on craigslist for 15 dollars each. They are 9 weeks old.

Is that a good price?

Are there any specific things I should look for?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated!!!!!

$15 isn't a bad price, but are the three you found closely related?

You may want to source out differing lines or even different breeds to keep you animals diversified genetically. We went with 4 different meat breeds to keep the lines as diversified as possible.

All but our first trio of New Zealands we only paid $10 each for, we now boast 1 Rex, 2 New Zealands (one turned out to be a buck instead of a doe, so he's stew) 2 Californians and 1 mutt.

Should give us enough genetic diversity to last for years :thumb:

Just my luck they are closely related:upsidedown:
My aunt is purchasing them for me, she told me to find some on craigslist, and I did so.

Sweeper can you explain your free range rabbit yard you talked about in your Urban Homestead thread? Please:D:

Our suburban homestead is set up so we utilize everything possible. Our garden produces food first, the waste goes directly into our 10X16 rabbit yard, as do all the weeds from maintaining the garden, this is our rabbits' main food source, with hay being secondary and pellets last. Waste not, want not.

I used a chain link dog kennel as the base for the rabbit yard, then strung chicken wire along the bottom to keep the little bastids from getting through the fence. We live in an area with very rocky soil, so all the rocks we tilled out of the garden line the rabbit yard fence on both sides to prevent them from burrowing out. I split the area in two, to allow the Timothy grass and Alfalfa to regrow as the other half is eaten down, this helps cut way down on the feed bill.

Another idea I had was the rabbits' fallout shelter :D: , rabbits can overheat easily, so having a cool area for them to hang out in is a neccessity. I just dug down a foot, then lined bricks 6" high around the hole, laid some old pallet slats over the hole and put the earth I dug out of the hole back on top of the shelter. It's normal to see all 6 of our rabbits hanging out in there on hot summer days, they actually prefer it over the frozen water bottles we put out for them :thumb: It's about 20 degrees cooler in their fallout shelter than in the shaded areas of their rabbit yard.

Rabbits are burrowers by nature, so it makes sense that they'd prefer the earth shelter over the artificial shade, they've actually excavated their shelter down another 6" into the ground since I built it, giving them a 18" deep shelter, with an additional 6" of head room above the level of the yard.

Another thing we've done is built a rabbit tractor out of 2X4's and chicken wire, we move this around our yard and get double benefits, the rabbits eat free feed, and I don't have to mow the lawn :thumb:

Check out "Sweeper & MissAnnie's suburban homestead" thread stickied in the Farming forum, there's some pics that may help you out :thumb:

Thanks so much!! I may have not read your sticky thread since you have updated it. I'll check it out again.

One more question. How do you keep the rabbits from breeding if they are in an open area?

So if you keep them in an open colony there is no way to control breeding?
If you start breeding rabbits at 8 months, can you keep them together when they are younger? Like 2 to 6 months old.
yes, we control breeding very easily. we keep our bucks separate from the doe colony. easy as that. then, we take a doe to a buck every week, and consequentially, we have a doe kindling every week, a group ready to wean every week, and a group ready to butcher every week.

I suggest breeding at 4 months old, before the does get too fat. You do not what to house males with females beyond 3 months old, or they can breed.

From the day they are born to 3 months old, we keep all of the babies together, and we usually butcher at 2.5-3 months old.

I just called the lady that has them. Yes, they are related, brother and sister. Their momma has 8 kits a litter, but had 9 in one. In the first 3 months of breeding will they be okay as far genetic diversity?

We don't, they breed when they breed. It's currently too hot for the does, so they have no inclination to allow the bucks to mount them, when it cools down a bit, they will start breeding.

Try to get just the two does from her, and start looking for a buck elsewhere.

A Rex, Californian, etc will breed with a New Zealand, and you get the benefit of genetic diversity, plus, bucks can fertilize the does at a younger age than the does can be impregnated.

Vela has lots of good info, be wise to listen to her :thumb:
