I have this funny feeling any meter to measure mileage that was on my vehicle would break a lot. Just saying...

Probably about as fast as some government GPS system. I don't buy a cell phone with a GPS and don't want one on my car.

We already do that here in Australia. The more you drive, the more fuel you use, the more fuel excise you pay.

And then we pay GST on the excise, so we're paying tax on what is effectively a tax.

Or are the Dutch proposing a tax on a tax on a tax, after paying income tax?

I'll give my driver's license up before I pay into a mileage tax, with the amount of miles I travel a year it would make working not worth it for me at all. I already pay enough in taxes that I support not only my family but at least 3 welfare families and 1 or 2 old people as well.

Can I ask what sort of money do you pay the government to legally drive your car on the road?

Here, we pay registration, which is broken down as follows;

For a 6 cylinder diesel 6x6 Landcruiser

Registration Fee - $443.45
Traffic Improvement fee -$48.85
Third party Insurance - $313.00

Then we pay 38c/l (1.44/US gallon) on all fuels bar LPG (excise free) and then we pay a 10% Tax on the total cost of the fuel.

Here's a listing of fuel taxes by state, Federal tax per gallon is 18.4 cents per gallon

Realize that the big 5 oil companies had to report to Congress on their earnings being too high

Average profit per gallon is .07 cents. Then they pay taxes on their profit.

The better question is what is Congress doing with our tax money???????

Instead they grill "for profit" companies about their profit

If the Federal Government imposes a "by the mile" tax, they will undoubtedly make the taxation rate seeking more revenue than what they are currently making.

Registration
Road tax
Safety Inspection
Gasoline taxes
Compulsory Insurance

My point is if they went to a mileage tax it would not be worth it to drive anymore for me, I drive between 60,000-70,000 miles a year. I buy a new vehicle every two years, again more taxes- Tax, Title, and License fees.

I think we should go with a one time sell tax on every product. I think it should include both Fed, state and local tax. Talk about fair and simple. It would also serve as a great incentive for the gov to stimulate the economy. But, no they can't do anything fair or anything that could possibly hurt their self perpetuating machine.
