This is driving me crazy...or crazier.

I have finally decided on a standard caliber. I'm going with the 9mm.

please dont confuse me any more with this, it was hard enough to decide between a .45 and a 9 but I made the call. The wife likes a 9 better and so do my daughters.

nuff said its a 9mm.

HOWEVER.....

I am a Glock fan, but I was looking real hard at a Taurus 92fs.....

So then I talk to my soon to be attorney / Deputy Sherrif brother, yes he's an over achiever....

and he says , "now in the real world"....it always starts that way doesn't it??? That the Taurus is a nice weapon but its a Beretta knock off and any spec of dust and the thing just jams up.

What??? OK so then he proceeds to recommend either a Beretta or SIG, "you know SIG's are what the Navy Seals use" he says... I'm thinking, but I'm not a Navy Seal,

I'm just a guy wanting a standard easy to maintain weapon that my entire family can shoot and share ammo with...

Is that so hard???

BTW I plan on buying one each of these for my family.

OK please good advise needed here and not about my brother I have that covered. :thumb:

Sig makes a superb weapon.... no doubt. You will probably not get an opinion that solidify's your feelings, as opinions of "best pistols" are as varied as firearms makers.

You stated your a Glock Fan. Not sure if this is because you already own one, have shot one, or what?

Glocks (especially the 17 and 19 9mm) are perhaps some of the finest most reliable 9mm pistols in the market place. I have both of these 9mm's. Let's say they are the AK-47 of the 9mm pistols. People either love glocks, or hate em. If the grip stance feels good for you, and your a fan, than get the Glock. It is an uber reliable weapon, requires minimal maintenance and cleaning, and is easy to break down (thats not to say you should not clean it).

With that said, let me throw out a caveat.... Glocks REQUIRE proper grip skills, or you will have issues with stove pipes. Not a big deal really, and my wife has absolutely no issues whatsoever handling her Glock 17... so it is not difficult, just something which needs to be practiced.

Hope this helps....

It does, and many thanks.

I have a 21 right now but the wife doesn't like it, not sure if its the kick or what, I'm thinking it is, she is tall but is not very heavy so this may be the issue.

Now days I am forced to carry a Beretta M9 (92F) at work I have also been to the Beretta Armors School. It has 32 moving parts, it's heavy, and here near the beach in the humidity it will rust fast. I would not own one personally, When I retired after 33 years as an LEO the agency gave me my Beretta 357 Sig Cougar with in the week I gave it to my son to get it out of the house.

I was first issue a 1911 back in 1966 now days I build them for fun and own several They are my home defense weapons because of their weight not my carry gun. Same with my steel S&W to heavy to carry.

I own a Taurus PT145, 45 cal. light small and have not had any problems with it during the 6 or 8 years I have had it.

Sig's are fine weapons but just never felt right in my hand. just me

I like these new fan dangled plastic guns and own 4 in 40 and 45 cal. these are my carry guns. easy to use, clean and work on. Have had no problems with them. Carried the Glock model 23 on a large PD SRT team for a number of years we never had problems and were at the range several times a week.

just remember the person who carries it must under stand:
Glock
This

plus this

equals safety

A difference of opinion is what makes horse racing and missionaries.

Well here's my .02 on the matter.....
I have a Beretta 96FS (.40) I purchased it in 1999 and I have shot the hell out of it, and I have never had any problems with it. It just shoots.

I had a Taurus Judge, I bring this only because I had to send it back to Taurus to have the cylinder worked on. Taurus did the work quicker than they said it would take and the gun functioned flawlessly afterwards. All of this to say their customer service / warranty work was great.

The only other help I can provide is taken from Tom Gresham

Shoot the different guns you are interested in, and go with the one you like to shoot (paraphrased).
Let us know what you end up with.

I own a Glock 17 and my daily carry (both of them) are SIGs. My wife also prefers the feeling of the SIGs over the Glock as well. I have fired the Beretta 92 on several occasions and while it is a fine weapon it would not be a my preference with the other two available. The issue with SIGs for some is the expense though I have never had a single failure with mine and that is saying something with as much as I shoot.

She will probably dig the G17 or the smaller 19 then. I would go to your local range that carries Glock. They usually have 17's for rent so she can run some rounds though it first.

I was really surprised that my wife and 19 y.o. took to the 17 so well. My wife is a dang good shot with hers.

Good analysis, Saint.

The first time I fired a Glock, it stove piped (loose grip). After a few rounds, I got over it. Tens of thousands of rounds later, the only malfunctions I experienced were in some of my reloads with too light of a charge.

My wife doesn't like the grip of Glocks. Her hands are small. She does like the Kahr PM 9, You give up magazine capacity in return for something you will use.

Shoot them all first & buy what feels best. I tend to favor Glocks for their simplicity and reliability.

I've got a Beretta PT-92 and love it. And a friend of mine has a Glock 17. I don't see whear you can go wrong with eather one. I think that I would let my wife and kids tell me which one that thay wanted and that is the one that I would get.

Taurus used to be the most highly repaired firearm ever made, but with new quality control measures and other issues taken care of this should be fixed. Take that for what you will..

Sigs are expensive but you get what you pay for.. a very well made gun.

I forget what the 3rd one was, a Berreta I think? The military uses them, they seem to be fine. Many want the 1911 back however but that is because we complain about having a 9mm for combat.

I would vote for Glock myself, there is nothing more reliable (stock out of the box) than a Glock. They are affordable for most and have lots of
after market parts.

I would also consider an XD 9mm

decocker and manual safety is nice for beginners(teaching your family in the safest way).can also learn double action pull.first thing a novice does when they pick up a pistol is put their finger on the trigger:headshake: yeh you teach them not to(obvious)but what do you do until they learn it?let them shoot themselves?i would never suggest a glock for any novice do to it being a cocked and not locked single action pistol.

sig is a bit expensive but they do have the sig pro(plastic version of the 226,ect)and you can pick up a CPO (certified pre owned) for under 400$.i think there new price is 450-500ish.

im bias on the tuarus vs beretta.beretta is my main pistol.but being the tuarus can cost 450$ now days it isnt saving that much money.the average beretta 92 is 550$ and easily found in excellent condition for 500$ with accessories.police trades with night sights for 400ish.

i would love to just say get a beretta...but being your not the only user you should get something with a slimmer grip size.i think the sig pro would work well for you.you dont got to look for the best option but only which gun should i try out first:D: sell/trade the ones that doesnt quite fit in,keep the ones you fall in love with.

A Glock 19 is the way to go. It is relative light, carries 15 in the mag, easy to carry and conceal, reliable and it works well. Just point and shoot. You are already familiar with the Glock platform so stick to it.
I am leaning toward this, not only for myself but in consideration of my family as well.

price is a consideration Im certainly not rich but I want something easy to maintain and easy to use, I think the Glock is the way to go.

My father owns both Glocks and Sigs. Ive shot both and own 2 berettas and am about to buy a third. They are great guns imho. Any of the three will do you well but from what I know of Taurus' they are cheaper knock offs. Shoot what you think feels good to you. The Glock vs Beretta vs Sig and Ak vs AR and 9mm vs .45 arguments are a little overplayed. All will do you well if you feel comforatable with them and practice.

Your brother criticizes the Berretta, and then recomends it?:juggle:

I like the Taurus 92 better than the Berretta, It has a frame mounted safety like a 1911, so can be carried cocked and locked. Glocks are OK, just Bleh. I would suggest you look at the CZ 75 also.

Wow. Ok.

For one, the Taurus is not a Beretta knockoff. It is a Beretta. Perhaps even better than a Beretta. Taurus purchased a Beretta factory that made 92s. Same blueprints, same employees, same machinery. It is a 92fs.

I have one with 10s of thousands of rounds through it. Never a single fte, ftf, anything. Ever. I often use cheap steel ammo through it. No problems. Prefect weapon. It is my favorite out of everything I have.

It is the best balanced, most accurate, most reliable handgun I have. I have never shot anything remotely like it, and likely never will.

From the Taurus website:
"Beretta had won a huge contract in 1974 to produce small arms for the army of Brazil. Part of the deal was that Beretta construct a Brazilian factory and use Brazilian labor. This they did, in the southwestern coastal city of Sao Paulo. When the contract ran out in 1980, Beretta sold the plant, literally "lock, stock and barrel," to Taurus. Taurus now owned everything that once belonged to Beretta, including drawings, tooling, machinery, and a very experienced work force. Taurus was in the pistol business, and immediately sought to improve on the Beretta design, resulting in the popular and acclaimed Taurus PT-92 and PT-99 9mm pistols."

Anyway, not a knockoff. It is one badass pistol for the money.
