I went ahead and cancelled by wells fargo debit card after hearing that between 11/27 and 12/15 some hackers got ahold of the debit and credit card info for 40 mill folks that used one at a store during the time period. Debit cards are especially important to cancel. I am going to start buying with cash most of the time after this.

Yep, I was smack in the middle of the time period when this happened. I checked my bank acct. a while ago and so far, so good. I will be going to the bank first thing in the a.m. and getting new debit cards. I have one in my mom's name on my account for her to use in emergencies and told her I'd be getting her a temporary one tomorrow until they send the new ones.

I just read about this a couple hours ago on the news sites. Wish I had seen it earlier in the day.

Targets Stolen Data

Not sure if to put this under manmade or financial.

110 million people were possibly victims to this attack. That in numbers is 1/3 the population of the US (granted we know people from other countries shopping target were probibly victims to, but the majority i the US). Thats a pretty large number and if it was that easy for them to that whats to stop it from being done on even a larger scale and with major banks. Something that could cause a bank shutdown or holiday?

On a side note with all our spying capabilities youwould think something like this would be caught before hand. Could this be a test run for something bigger? Was this Walmarts way of trashing the competition?

Target credit cards hacked - thoughts?

So they have now expanded the number of accounts they think were hacked to over 100 million!

Are people requesting new credit cards? So far I have just been trying to check my account every couple days.
Now they are saying other retailers were hacked also. Neimen Marcus, etc.

Were they really hacked? I heard today all they found was some malware on their system.
Are there reports of people's cards really getting hit or ID thefts occuring?

If such a grand scale hack was conducted, why didn't the NSA or other alphabet soup spy agency that is continually violating everyone's privacy rights, discover the hacking in progress and protect us? After all, we traded our Liberty (and about a zillion dollars) for some false sense of security. Well, where is my false sense of security?

I don't shop at Target however my wife does and alas they got our number a few weeks ago. We monitor our charges rather frequently so we noticed after 2 of the charges. Both charges were taken off and they mailed is new cards. The problem I have is changing my billing info for all of the items that automatically bill each month!!

And no it wasn't a Target card but rather a regular Visa card. Kind of scary that you read more and more about this problem happening. I would like to not use a CC but I find it almost impossible to not have one now a days!

Identity theft can be devastating to those who have been through it.
The damage it can cause is far worse than many SHTF scenarios because the effects are very long lasting where "recovery" can take months, if not years.

We primarily use our PayPal debit card for this very reason. Sometimes it can be extremely difficult, often impossible, to have a bank rescind fraudulent charges.

I've had someone obtain my PayPal card information twice, probably from online purchases. Within minutes of a fraudulent charge being made PayPal was on the phone with me to make sure I was the one making the purchases. They cancelled the card and gave me the monetary credit for the fraudulent charges while they investigated.

Say what you will about PayPal and their anti-gun stance (I personally don't subscribe to this theory), but they have been a fantastic company to work with. I would do all my banking with them were it possible. With the amount of money that we process as a business each day, dealing with a business that has my back is a huge plus in my book.

The last Target store I went to didn't have great laptops (their specifications make them lower performance machines compared to what I already have), good bikes (no IGH?), or much of anything that was of very good quality compared to what other stores have.

Why shop at Target in the first place? That is the closest store to your current residence that you know of?

Yeah, I shop with cash. It is a chore for people who don't like doing the work of counting the money they hand over to the cashier. I think that is one thing the make "paying with plastic" very appealing to some who do it very often when they get the chance.

You may have to religiously check your balances for years. Most likely the hackers will strike when you least expect it months or years down the road. They most likely wouldn't do it now since people are watching their accounts like a hawk.

Never shop at target. I tried a couple times, but just couldn't find anything I wanted to waste money on. I think their stuff is high priced junk.
Neimen Marcus just sounds out of my buget. Never even set foot in one.

We went to using cash way more in recent years. No CC's at all, and try to limit our debit usage.
