Survival Tin Content

I recently wrote this article on the contents of my Altoids survival tin. I'd like to get feedback on my kit and ideas from others who have made a similar mini-survival kit. Any must-have items that I'm missing?

add a rolled up hairnet .. they are good for catching birds and fish in a pinch -- instead of using fishing hooks( they are so small you cam probably keep them anyway ) ... and fishing line ( would still keep a few yards )

trade the fishing line for 20 gauge galvanized wire ... and lots of it .. many more uses and much stronger,

loose the water purification tablets and add some potassium permanganate crystals ... for disinfecting water works just as well .. concentrated can disinfect wounds - added to sugar and sprinkled with water will start a fire ..
wraps smaller then most in little gift card envelope, sealed with tape.

if you can find red tire-rubes from trucks instead of bicycle tire tubes (range bands).. you can make a respectable sling shot ( the rubber is more flexible) http://slingshotforum.com/topic/19953-original-red-innertube-rubber/

I may regret this:rolleyes:, but here is what I have found to be most useful for me over the years:
HSS drill bit
.22lr round
Nails
I'm needing to learn, what's the uses of these items?

I tried to take apart a 22lr round when I was a kid, without tools wasn't easy.

I think someone said they carried a golf tee, but I forget the uses of it.
Guess I should write stuff down.

Maybe he missed the first one??

Sorry, forgot to follow this thread.

The .22lr cartridge, HSS drill bit and nail are all small, take up little space, yet have many uses.
The 22lr can be easily pulled apart (by wiggling the projectile) and the powder used for fire starting (the assembled cartridge provides a reasonably water resistant container in wet conditions). The lead projectile being malleable can be hammered into holes or splits to make temporary repairs in steel pipes, before binding over the top. The whole cartridge could be used as a ‘distraction device’ by putting it in an empty tin can with a small fire or candle under it. Being HSS the drill bit will drill into numerous materials even when used by hand gripped with a multi-tool or it can be used as a very hard, sharpened point for numerous traps or weapons. The flutes in the drill bit also allowed it to be snapped in half, giving you two pieces. A nail can be used as a barb in spring traps. Attach some line to the centre and place inside bait to jam in the throat of small animals, birds or fish. A nail can be bent to make a hook again for catching fish. As kid’s we would glue a woodscrew or a nail into the end of home made arrows and then bind around them for a durable arrow head. Masonry nails are much harder and retain a sharp point longer, but cannot be bent to form hooks. Or there are the many uses that you would normally use a nail for, i.e. attaching one thing to another.
If all else fails you could just drill a hole in a handy tree, push in a nail, then hang your jacket on it, while you take your last 22lr cartridge & rifle and go and find something for dinner;)

SL:)

I have tried several types of wire saws no worked well except for the one i bought at a sprinkler suppy store. It was for cutting pvc pipe. The chainsaw type work well but it will not fit in an altoids box

That's why you go slightly larger for the sake of including a tool that is more likely to save your butt and less likely to break if you actually need it. Fitting as much as you can into a given space is a fun thought exercise, but sometimes one needs to be flexible about the size of the space itself.

This tin is the same depth as an altoids tin but just a little wider and longer. I found it at steak and shake as a gift card holder. It'll still fit in a pocket easily enough, and allows you to carry a much more useful tool. :thumb:
