Survival shelter toilet

Living in tornado alley and having some close by recently got me to thinking. I have a small room to get into for emergency shelter. Thinking of worst case scenario and I could be better n the shelter for a couple of days. What is the best idea for a toilet? I was thinking a 5 gallon bucket set up with one of those diaper disposal systems that you can twist up a small sack of waste and keep the smell down. Any other ideas?

There are lots of options, but a simple inexpensive means would be to urinate in a repurposed 5 gallon wide mouth plastic jug, like cooking oil comes in. Defecate in plastic bag, in a 5 gallon bucket with a toilet seat to sit on. Remove bag, squeeze out the air, seal with a tight knot & store in a separate bucket with a lid.

Your best bet, if you afford it, is a flushable chemical toilet.

Will make disposal of waste easier and cut down smell tremendously.

A 5 gallon bucket with 1/2 inch of the clumping multiple cat variety of cat litter in the bottom is excellent odor control, just sprinkle a bit after each use and it works well. Easy to bury no fuss, no muss. Liquids could go into a separate jug or not, up to you.

If your going to use just one bucket with no liquid jug, you'll need to use a bit more litter to absorb the liquids but that's what they are made to do. Keep it simple.

If kitty is in your shelter, no need for a separate litter box. But you will have to practice with kitty because they need to learn to share with other species. Same if you have a small Fido...

If you regularly use litter that comes in big buckets, they work well, too. A little less likely to tip over than a 5 gallon bucket, have handles, and are easier for small children, but they fill up faster.

Baking soda helps with odor, both in the "toilet," and the freezer/refrigerator boxes...

Consider a UDDT (Urine diverting Dry Toilet) system.

To date, more then happy with mine. No oder, no digging holes, and easy to maintain. For a drying agent, a bag of pet bedding (cedar chips) can be purchased at Wal Mart, or Pet Supply shops. The UDDT I built is a single vault system using a 20 gallon trash container. For drying material, a mix of ashes from the burn barrel, mixed with sawdust. Now that spring is here, mowed grass will be added as an additional covering layer. For the amount of time spent in a storm shelter, two five gallon buckets from one of the box stores would be more then enough, one for solids, the other for liquids.

If you go this route, and have questions, pm me.

What we bought

Special design toilet seat to fit standard 5-gallon bucket $12.99: http://www.amazon.com/Bucket-Portable ...

Liners $9.99 for pack of 6 (plastic trash bags are much cheaper):

Deodorizer packets $6.99 for 12/pk:

Dig a hole for disposal and pour a little hydrated lime (aka slaked lime) on it. It usually sells for about $10 for a 50lb bag at many feed stores.

Good for me!

I'll tell you what I'm doing.

My husband is very crippled. He can barely walk 10 feet to the bathroom. Any kind of outhouse or hole in the ground would be impossible.

We have a commode chair. The kind with the bucket. Now, he has a 2 quart bottle. He pees in that and I get rid of it. It is better than a urinal because it has a tight sealing cap.

He pees in the bottle.

Now, for solids, I got feline pine cat litter. I would line the commode bucket with a garbage bag and put in a small layer of the litter. He can deposit into there and we put the lid on, or throw the whole works out.

For me, urinating is easy - just put a trash 5 gallon bucket under the commode chair, sit and urinate into that.

I would suggest looking around for a used commode chair. They should be pretty cheap.

I have something similar. My Mother bought one for my Grandfather, but he passed away before he could use it. I found it in the garage, unused, and still in the plastic it was purchase in. I haven't used it. I can use the bucket, a trash bag or a hole in the ground. I can rough it until things go too long. But I'm lucky to have it. I also kept a wheelchair and two sets of aluminum crutches.

It's good to be a scrounger. :thumb:

Something like this, but she didn't pay anything like this. Local wholesale medical supply had it WAY cheaper.

Tornadoes do not last for days. Toliet facilities are a long term problem. It might be unpleasant to use a bucket for 48 hours but not a life threatening danger.

Long term survival in a tornado shelter is not a viable option.

OK, OP... Is this room in your house? It sounds like it is. Have you thought about how hard it would be to just plumb in a toilet? Not all that hard if you have the know how. If you can access a sewer line but not a water line you could just keep a couple of buckets full close by for flushing.

Plumbing in a toilet isn't an option, unfortunately. I don't plan long term survival in the shelter, but have heard some spent 2 days in theirs before debris was moved and they could get out. Just thinking about the "what ifs".

since none of you has written this, i thought i'd chime in for an inexpensive toilet seat for a five gallon bucket....get a one dollar pool noodle toy. slit the bottom of the noodle, place your trash bag into your bucket then the noodle holds the trash bag in place. cut the length to fit the bucket with about a 3 inch opening in the front--just like a real toilet seat.
