Over the years (decades, centuries) both military personnel and survivalists etc will have no doubt used knives for a multitude of different tasks but what alterations will they have made to their knives and for what uses.
Cutting notches in the blade, cutting notches in the back, using the handle in different ways, drilling holes, sharpening different parts of the blades, flattening certain parts, attaching items, the ideas go on and on hopefully.
Any unusual or different way you know of people using survival knives or for any unusual tasks.
Please share any you may know of, if there's an anecdote with it all the better.
Chop chop.

dude it depends on the situation and the original size of your knife. its not like your going to be able to mod a SAK to an extreme. Don't really know why you would mod your knives, but i figure you can shave off the tip and give it a tanto edge. tanto edges are good at puncturing hard materials. If you notice, most "police" knives are tanto, in the case they need to cut through a car roof or something (sounds like hollywood to me either way)

I've been in the Fire/Rescue for over 10 years now and have yet to take a class or observe anyone do vehicle extrication with a knife. Seatbeats, of course, but cut roof?

I don't think that it's so much that they teach it or have a coure on it, but you may have the ability too if need be. But unless you have a pretty large knife it's not gonna do much anyways. Just like having a LMF2, ESEE 5 there made to egress out of a downed plane. How many of us have these knifes yet down own a plane that we would have the capabilities of even carrying the knives onto a plane. You know what I mean.

On the back side of that Tanto the cop folds out a set of hydraulic cutters and spreaders. All he has to do is plug it into his cigarette lighter in his car...

He can also fold it up and it becomes a hydraulic ram. :thumb:
