I'm just curious what sorts of hats people have for wilderness survival, bugging-out, urban survival, hunting, camping, and so on. Do you have one hat for any situation or several hats for different scenarios?

I have a nice collection of Baseball Style caps....they usually do fine but with the heat wave we had I bought a Boonie Hat Like Kev's to keep my ears from burning while working in the yard and garden. If I am outdoors for extended periods in the summer I need Loose fitting long shirt, light long pants and a and a Boonie Hat.

I imagine it would be a must have being on foot in Texas in the summer...winter a Baclava will do nicely.

:D: I am going to say that must have been a spell checker error. It's BALACLAVA or maybe you prefer to wear a sweet Turkish pastry on your head.

Oh and keeping with the original subject. I have a collection different camo boonie hats and one rather dashing safari hat.

wouldn't say its a "survival" hat per say but i wear it when I'm outside working in the yard or fields or just when outside really keeps the sun off my face and neck
its comfortable goes with any attire i have on it was cheap and it works

Well, I'm bald, so hats save my head from sunburn and heat loss Toques in the
winter, ballcaps and a bugsuit for late April to September.{ Blackflies, then Mosquitos. I love watching my city friends go for a stroll at dusk... welcome to the food chain...}
Last year I picked up a wide
brim cotton hat to protect my ears and neck from sunburn. It wicks off sweat nicely,
and doesn't fly off when I'm in the boat. Polarized clipon sunglasses are also a must because of glare off the water and all the shoals...

Bonnies or any other crush hats with brims would be a good choice if you could only have one. I personally don't wear them that much, I am close enough in looks and personality to Carl in Caddy Shack (Bill Murray) I don't need the visual reminder :)

summertime my official good time hat is a straw cowboy hat almost sombrero big. Light, carry my own shade on my head. I wouldn't want to tramp through heavy brush with it but for a hot georgia sunny day it keeps my head cool and dry when it rains. Plus it makes a handy impromptu bucket.

Winter I have a black felt hat with a round uncreased dome, straight brim that folks have described as either amish farm boy or creepy preacher, take your pick.

Alternately I have a black leather cowboy hat I bought for 7 bucks in one of those country convenient stores. Love the brick brack general store nature of those back wood mom and pops. The hat is kinda tacky but so am I. Tickled me because a bad guy mexican in Lone Star State of Mind wore one just like it. I know I am rambling but that was one seriously funny movie.

Yeah I like hats. Funny part is I am getting so old I think people assume I wear them because I am bald. My hair hasn't turned gray or loose yet :)

I have a boonie hat, but it just doesn't feel right. It's sized correctly, but I need something that works with long, thick hair. Think I need something with a wider brim. I'd also like something that worked well in colder climates since we get down to -40 up here sometimes.

The thing that works best so far are hoods. :)

About 13 years ago I bought my son a wool hat for Civil War (civilian) reenacting. He was 14 at the time. I paid $90 for this hat as it is a true replica, handmade. Well, he decided shortly there after that he was not interested and I had this expensive hat. However .. I quickly realized just how convenient it is to wear in rainy weather pitching my wall tent at the events. It keeps the rain off my face and from going down my neck .. has never leaked water. I would most definitely recommend this type of hat. After all .. it is what out ancestors wore doing exactly what were are discussing. I also have a roller hat.

You just said a survival hat, well it depends on where you live and the season, just like anything else.

I personally wear a boonie hat hiking in summer, spring, fall. Occasionally in summer I wear a shemagh. They really do wonders at making you cooler, even though you wouldn't think so if you aren't familiar with that type of headgear.

In the winter time i always wear a du-rag underwater other type of headgear I wear. This winter headgear is typically one of those flannel winter hats with the fur insulated inside and fur insulated ear flaps, with a strap on the earflaps to keep them from flying up. Think Russian hat.

Survival hats, think about what people that live in the type of environment you are giong to be in wear.

Russia - very cold - big furry hats with ear flaps
Middle East - shemaghs - turbans
Middle America - ball caps - lends very little to survival in the wild, but helps

Normally I just wear a ball cap. For hiking and such I have two others that I bring, depending on the weather.

For cold and snowy weather, I like the Blackrock hat. It's 900fp down, and since it's made of nylon the snow doesn't stick to it and melt on my head like it does with fleece hats. It blocks wind much better than fleece beanies, and it's a lot more compressible for the amount of warmth I get.

The other is an Outdoor Research Nimbus Sombrero, similar to this Seattle Sombrero. It's waterproof, only the Nimbus is more breathable. This way I don't have to wear a stuffy hood when it's raining...hoods get all muggy inside, I can't hear what's going on around me as well, they don't turn with my head, etc...this hat solves all that.

And then a good collection of BDU/DCU/ABU patrol caps, boonie hats, etc. But I think my favorite SHTF hat will be this one. I'll sit on my porch and watch it all go down...
