Hey guys

Gonna be picking up a Mossberg 590 SPX in the next couple weeks, or whenever it comes in... Seems to come just about the way I want it - Ghost ring sights, extended mag tube, etc... Except for the grip.

Looking to get a pistol grip/buttstock for it, simply for the fact that I dislike the typical shotgun grip/stock.

Suggestions on brands and places to buy?

Price isn't too much of an issue... I'd rather have quality than have something cheap, unreliable, and uncomfortable.

Thanks!

Don't get anything made by ATI, everything they make is crap. I believe mesa tactical makes one, also look at Choate, and SpeedFeed. The Shotforce, one is made my ATI refer to my above sentence for that, and if you think I am just repeating what I have heard, I am not I have almost owned every stock, and accessory ATI has made for the Mossberg line, I have never been happy with any of it. It always either felt cheap, moved around constantly or just had all around quality issues, do yourself a favor learn from my mistakes and buy quality stuff the first time. I now use a speedfeed stock and I am very happy with the quality.

My advice:

test the pistol grip/w buttstock first.

It makes reloading much less intuitive and traditional still shotgun stocks rule.

I sold my pistol grip/w buttstock shotgun (Fabarm) and replaced it with a traditional Rem870 Police, traditional buttstock and Wilson Combat Ghostring sights.

If you really feel more comfortable with a pistol grip/buttstock combination, you can go Speedfeed (quality is good) or if you want adjustable buttstock, go with the Mesa Tactical LEO adapter (and your choice of AR pistol grip and AR buttstock).

I am looking for something similar for my remmy. I was told by my brother that I needed to replace the factory stock with a full stock with pistol grip. He is one person who I listen to when it comes to firearms. I was looking at either the Speed Feeds or the Mesa Tactical Urbino.

I've tried a few pistol grips, they all suck. Can't aim well and the recoil is painful when shooting slugs.

Tactical stocks are the best in my opinion, splitting the recoil between hand and shoulder you can shoot for hours. Plus aiming is easier.

Thanks for all the suggestions!

As far as pistol stock vs. standard shotgun stock, well, I'll have a chance to really try out both since the firearm comes with the standard stock. I've only known pistol grip style firearms except for my Savage, so I feel like I'll know it and handle it pretty well. But time will tell I suppose :)

The tang safety on 590 will be come a concern with pistol grip stock, if I were wanting a pistol grip shotgun it would be an 870, and I am a Mossberg guy. I had a pistol grip stock both the 6 position, and the fold over the top, I didn't like either one. On top of them both being ATI as mentioned above, it made reaching the tang safety unsafe, as you will have to remove your hand form the trigger group use the safety, not good in HD situation IMO.

I currently have a Speedfeed stock on it, no pistol grip, it has a shorter lenght of pull than the standard Mossberg stock, and allows me to store four more shells in the stock adding weight to reduce the recoil with out noticing the increase weight gain being it's in the stock.

I'd say to be sure and try out a pistol grip buttstock befor buying one. It's not the shooting, that part is fine. It's the reloading, it sucks big time. You will dislike the traditional shotgun stock a lot less.
I have a Benelli M2 tactical that I'm fixin to give away because I hate the stock so bad!

I really like the Butler Creek blued metal folding stock for my home defense 500, i found one on amazon for 65.99 new plus free shipping, its very sturdy opened or closed, comes with a sling mount screw that just threads right in to the side, it has a nice rubber butt pad and the length of pull and angle of the stock in the open position feels like a standard mossberg stock.

Not 100% on your gun, but all the Mossy's I've seen with pistol grips have a big fatal flaw IMO, it's where the slide release is in comparison with the grip.

Maybe go check one out at a shop to make sure, but I wouldn't want a pistol grip Mossy.....

just my $.02

I found that too until i put my NonRecoilsupressed Knox stock on my 500.

I have a GG&G single point sling kit on it cause the 500 works best(compared to my 590) with the single point sling anyways.

Turns out it acts like a "spacer" and provides some room and i can manipulate the slide release easier than without the "spacer".

not perfect like a normal stock butt not all bad either.

If the location in your profile is accurate, youll have to remove the mag extension to stay legal, and theres no chance you can go with an adjustable/telescoping stock. It would have to be fixed (does NY allow pinning?).

I'd keep the extra capacity and the hunting stock... Ive tried so many stocks on different shotguns, I always seem to go back to the tried and true originals, especially if they are wood.:thumb:

They do allow pinning, however there are already many shotguns at the local store I shop, which have telescoping stocks (similar to AR15 stocks), extended mag tubes, etc. So they must be legal?

I'm wondering if that law pertains to semi-auto's only? Because when I asked the owner about putting a pistol grip stock on a 930spx (semi auto), he said you can't do it...

This past weekend I went there to get a handle on things (no pun intended) and I've decided I still like the pistol grip best. I can reload with it fine, and the slide release is right above my thumb. Only thing that sucks is the safety location with the pistol grip, but with a pump gun, that's not too bad.

Anyhow... Still waiting on back order

Well gents, actually ended up purchasing an M590A1 which comes with a pistol grip and 6 position stock (exactly the way I wanted it), but thanks for all the suggestions and links! Hopefully it can be of help to others who are looking for the same thing!

Range report should be soon... Pending weather.
