I bought my first 5 Gal. can of kerosene today.At Tractor Supply, it was $50.00. I feel like that was a bit expensive. Am I wrong. It was a sealed can,s0 I was wondering about long term storage.Will it break down over time if its not opened?

Probably cooking and heating. Thats my prefered fuel to stock. It stores for a long time if you get some aditive to keep the bacteria from growing.

Wow, that's pretty high! I'd keep it sealed and buy some at a local gas station. As for long term storage, I keep mine from winter to winter ith no problems. I use it in a torpedo heater, Kerosun heaters, and for oil lamps. Those are pretty forgiving as far as fuel quality goes. Maybe do a Google search for kerosene storage? ...and have a report on my desk by Friday.

I like kerosene for emergency fuel, too. In my neck of the woods, it's about $2.99 or so a gallon, and it stores well. (I use the blue 5 gallon containers, $8 or so depending on where you find them)

Ace Hardware here locally sells it for about 3 buck or so a gallon from a pump. Buying it in the 5 gallon cans from home depot or lowes and your going to get gang raped on the price.
I keep it mainly for Lighting and heating when the power goes out or I get caugfht withg my pants down on Propane Used it like this in Japan for years as did the average Japanese. My fuel could easily last a year without stabilizer.

Late last summer I was in our local megga home mart. In my state they must store their kerosene outside. Cans rust, labels peal. Nobody wants them. I scored a deal at $1.50/gal on 120 gallons when the local out the pump was $4+. The store manager was happy to be rid of it. Needless to say I am going to try it again this year. I was asked why I wanted so much...I said I had an antique John Deere tractor than ran on the stuff. Yea I could use diesel, but she smoked a lot. He thought it was cool.

Kerosene draws water from the air and bacteria grows in the water. Fill a jug as full as you can and seal it good. as long as you rotate you'll be fine with using the stuff from the pump.
I heat with kerosene so rotation wouldn't be a problem. I don't think kerosene will turn to varnish like gasoline so I doubt stabil would help much.

buy "jet A" at the local airport. Works fine as its a better grade of kerosene.
Home Depot is asking $45-50/5 gallon can, too. I found that some tool rental stores carry kerosene at the pump, some will sell you 55 gallon drums of it, although I went that route once and regretted it. Too heavy to move around and takes up a lot of space. I prefer 5 gallon cans, but I haven't bought any in four or five years, so I don't know the going rate. I now use more propane heaters and keep the kerosene for emergencies (propane is less smelly and easier to find).
