Hi,
I'm newto the board and have been lurking for a while just researching. I am interested in stocking up on manuals and other books to keep in my BOL to have on hand as references. I am looking for medical and dental guides, food preservation, wild plant ID, weapons, water, etc. I know that training is most important and I plan on reading, but when SHTF we won't be able to get online and ask questions so I am trying to stock up and have as much GOOD info on paper as I can. So any books that you would recommend would be appreciated. I can't afford too many books but I would like to get a good collection. Thanks

Keep in mind you need to read the books in your library. It should be a reference to look back to not just a huge collection of books you never read or look in as the information is more valuable in your head than in a book. Many here simply collect pdf's to have a source they never look to.

Hi,

Hi,
For awareness, I've read these and find them excellent resources to get and keep my mind straight and focused:

Overshoot: The Ecological Basis of Revolutionary Change, William R. Catton Jr (Professor Emeritus, Sociology, Washington State U)
(He wrote this in 1982 as a warning.)

Bottleneck: Humanity's Impending Impasse, Catton again.
(He wrote this in 2009, because we didn't listen in 1982; now it's too late. Not a question of if, but of when.)(Don't have to read first one to get second one.)

Plan B 4.0: Mobilizing to Save Civilization, Lester R. Brown, Earth Policy Institute
(The amount of footnotes and research is impressive. It's my understanding on a prior version Ted Turner bought 5,500 copies and gave them to various leaders. Not that it made a difference.)
(In one book he discusses facts and issues concerning water, oil, land, food, population, energy usage, etc. I find it useful for the facts his institute has gleaned from respected sources. An eyeopener. His conclusions seem rational to me.)
(Available as .pdf. They thought it was so important they put it out there for free.)

And another useful book, also out there .pdf:

Shooting to Live with the One-Hand Gun (1942)
Captain William Fairbairn and Captain Eric Sykes

Take care,
Hal

Most of my recommendations were mentioned, although I would add The Crash Course by Chris Martenson, very interesting percpective.
I'm new here so I'm glad to see that someone else on here is also concerned about enviormental issues and their potential impacts.

What about Special Operations Forces Medical Handbook, 2nd Edition and Wilderness Medicine (6th Edition)
Both of these have very high Amazon ratings (and price tags). Perhaps they're too technical for the layperson?

as a side note, be sure to check the publication/print dates of military manuals. many being sold today were done back in the 1960's thru the 1980's. when you realize that, then you should be looking for updated information on that particular subject as lots have changed since then.

I'd like to add to Jerry's extensive list. Specifically two medical handbooks. 1) US Army Special Forces Medical Handbook, 2) Combat Medic Field Reference. And don't forget to check the downloads section, there are a ton of good books in PDF form completely free.

As usual you are a wealth of information Jerry. The only problem I have with lists are that they may well be just a distraction. I happen to think that some of the PAW fiction may be much more valuable than all of the manuals and books that were on the lists. I have a greenhouse and garden in New Hampshire and try to grow most of my food. At the moment, I am fighting deer, woodchucks, striped cucumber beetles, cabbage worms, early blight, powdery mildue, excessive heat in the greenhouse causing the greens to bolt and a few other things. Using mostly organic means, fencing, and all the other resouces of a fully operating distribution system I am barely hanging on. That is without a collapse of the rule of law or the powers that be wanting to "redistibute" my resources for the greater good. Knowing that you can grow corn, having the seed, fertilizer, and insecticides, the grinder to make a flour and the right lime to allow you to utilize the full value of it may well outwayhaving 30 military manuels in your library. I think Lights Out, read as it was being posted as well as Kindle, changed my viewpoint more than any manual or other resource. Like my favorite story of yours, The Old Man and his tractor, I bought a 1941 Ford 9N and have most of the equipment for small scale farming. I also have several sets of complete electrical systems, about $300 each new, and stored gas. The gas I am using now is 2 years old and works fine in the tractor. It won't work in the chainsaw and I need to work on that some more. I took a Coastguard boating couse one time and the retired Chief who taught us got our full attention in the first 10 minutes. He said "Experience is a cruel teacher, You have the final exam and then you lare taught the lesson." A lot of your stories, as well as the others on your site, TOM and Fleataxi, teach you a lot of lessons and give us something to think about. A Springfield 06, 500 rounds of ammo, a Lee handloader. and a few pounds of powder, primers, and bullets and knowing how to use it well beats the most expensive new rifle out there that has been locked in the gun safe and not used.
