In another thread someone posted about Starkist (yes the tuna company) having come out with a couple of Beef retort pouches, taco flavor and bbq flavor.
I decided to try them and ordered the taco flavor first.

It is surprisingly good.

When I first got my order in I picked up a pouch (had ordered a 12 pack) and my first thought was that there isn't much meat in this squishy pouch but, it does turn out to be enough for a single taco per pouch.
8 grams of protein and 100 calories per pouch. kind of high in sodium at 350 mg but no high fructose corn syrup and made from 90% lean beef.

I added a slice of american cheese to it and scooped it up with some tostitos scoops tortilla chips. It was really quite good. Very tasty, not overly spicy but definitely not bland.

I am ordering the BBQ version next but will also be getting more of the taco flavor.

What comes in the bag... enough for a decent 'street' sized taco.

How it looks when you spoon it out....

Entire pouch dumped into a bowl to microwave it. The spoon is a basic long handle titanium spoon for size reference.

A standard size slice of American cheese almost completely covers it in the bowl

I can see this being a good quick meal for on the trail or something to keep in a GHB.
In a GHB with a packet of the MRE cheese and jalapeno sauce on top of some pilot crackers.. might be pretty good.

I did try a bite without heating it up and it was fine so even if you can't microwave it or have a fire to heat it up it's still very edible .

It's nice to know I can carry a couple of these, a couple of tuna pouches and a couple of their chicken pouches and have lightweight, easy to carry, no cooking needed meals ready to go if I need them.

Not incredibly healthy but I won't starve and I won't need to worry about my water supply being used up by freeze dried meals.

What is the shelf life on these? I like to keep things like this in my vehicles and pack just for some quick energy in a pinch. I think that taco meat could go good with MRE crackers and maybe the cheese. I think I'd pass on the BBQ flavor as I've never had any of those varieties from any manufacturer that's not sickly sweet.

The packets I have show a best by date of Sept 04 2027.

$1.49 is a good price, I'll have to go by Kroger's soon.
I paid $2.14 a pouch on Amazon for the first order, just to try them but I will switch it to subscribe ands save and it will drop it down to $1.80 a pouch (and no need to drive to Kroger's so I'll save on gas)

No Krogers in my neck of the woods. Any idea where I can pick up some in SoCal?

EDIT: sorry folks, the first back of package picture was the BBQ pouch, not the Taco pouch.
I have edited it so y'all can see the correct Taco pouch (the larger picture)

well it doesn't look too criminal in the begin, almost nice... then they begin with the weird stuff:
"whole grain oats" (trying to imitate ground beef)
"molasses"
"honey solids" why not just honey?
"brown sugar" (now we are back at the molasses) so 4th sweetener since there is sugar near the top too... is it a cake or beef?
"natural smoke flavoring" (absolutely nothing natural about that)
"extractives of paprika" (why not just use paprika?)
"caramel color" (big no no)
"soy lecithin" (another huge no no)
"corn starch" (yeah nope)

To beh onest I wouldn't touch that with a 10' pole... rather get some canned pure meat if I needed some "food easy to store" and then spice it up meself.

Well actually, I made a mistake and posted the back of the BBQ pouch, not the taco pouch.
Below is the back of the taco pouch but considering your aversion to the ingredients in the bbq I seriously doubt you buy any processed food pouches.

Actually these are generally a very good trail food. The high sodium is a benefit as its electrolytes. They pack small and are shelf stable so no special packing needed to get some meat on the trail with you.

I've used the starkist tuna pouches to bait and trap a raccoon before- so theres a dual use there as I doubt coons would be too picky about flavor.

These packets add some much needed protein and fats to campfire trail biscuits. The combo weighs very little.

Please note the warning "DO NOT microwave pouch"....
Lol.. Oh, to have 'been a Fly on the wall', eh? :geek:

Personally, I prefer the Salmon / Tuna-pouches (w/ a side of Almonds, etc) as 'Hiking Rations' - better choices for 'survival food' (in the Context of "these packeted offerings") since they're almost 2x the grams of Protein / same-size Pouch, and provide at least Some 'essential fats' (Oils), but.. To each his own, certainly 'More Options are better'. (y)

Definitely not my first choice as a regular meal, but great as a standby “emergency“ meal. When I was still working, we would head out to the “field“ in the morning for an hour or two and next thing you know it’s an all day event. Always carried a few cans of Beanie Winnies, Vienna Sausages, tuna, Chef Boyardee, etc. These would make a nice addition. This plus a couple bags of chips and a Snickers Bar, I’d be good for the day.
