My preferred style of canteen is the US Army style, though I really don't like that it's plastic. It makes the water taste terrible. I've been looking for a stainless steel canteen that's kidney shaped and finally found one. It's perfect except for one thing-it's only 3/4 the size.

The company's website is http://uscanteen.com/

I made a video review of it

It'd be great if a company would make one to mil-spec, but I'll settle for this one for now.

A few companies did make some for awhile just for the USA.
Called M-1910 and M-1942.

BTW, since nobody said anything,

if you put USGI metal and plastic canteens side by side,

the plastic is bigger/taller.

Which is why plastic canteens are tight fit in canvas covers.

And why metal canteens fit looser in newer nylon covers.

Get an Arctic canteen. Usually you can find them on Ebay. Make sure you buy one with the cover and the cup which attaches on the botton of the canteen. I have several in my winter survival kit stored on our snowcat. The water does not freeze in the canteen.

Too bad you didn't take cup out, not everyone knows what USGI cup looks like.
Or is your kit Canadian?? There's several canteen cups that won't fit the plastic canteen.
I bought a Canadian canteen on ebay that was to be double walled for artic use. It was broken and I didn't know until too late.

If you dig through the comments, you will find I posted a link to a stainless steel canteen that is the correct size and shape.

If not, just google around, you will find it.

How pricey is the DHK Stainless Steel Military Canteen? I don't see the price on the linked website and googling doesn't seem to find anyone even selling it. Can it be had? Where?

Other stainless steel canteens seem to be =/- $90 on eBay. Stainless steel bottles seem to go for $10-17 on Froogle.

I have found that my Sport Berkey filter will fit in a Klean Kanteen stainless bottle and a titanium cup will fit around the bottle, but I am seeking other reasonably priced solutions that would work with the US military canteen cup which is larger.

Very good video ! I still have my old canteen kit, the 1 qt. plastic canteen, nylon cover, SS cup , and cup stove. I removed the ALICE clips and like you, put a shoulder strap on it. I like that cover you have. Have they changed the cover since the 1980s? While you make a good point about the SS canteen being somewhat smaller, it is off set by the extra space you have inside the kit for a few essentials. I really like that. I'm thinking for an urban evac situation. Thanks for the post ! Good job . TP

Gee TP, the OP hasn't posted anything since 2009.
The cover is like most NATO water bottle carries, covers whole canteen.
Even MOLLE users have pouches that do the same.
The old M1910/M1942/M1956/ALICE style is long gone.
My newest SS canteen is from 1945.

Is there a significant difference between the military aluminum canteen and the stainless steel one besides weight? Are there supposed to be ill effects or taste from aluminum?
1. Cost. I'd love all my kit made from titanium, but...

2. Aluminium at 2 or 3 litres per day has far less effect than 55 grains of lead in a millisecond.

3. Plastic doesnt shine.
