Being prepared is gaining attention. I saw a commercial a few minutes ago that had this site listed at the end:
http://www.readyregion.org/RelId/606373/ISvars/default/Home_3.htm

Its for the Philadelphia area and it goes over being prepared for emergencies. It promotes being ready to evacuate or shelter in place.

I chuckled at the "GO bag" and how it compares to most of our BOB's :D:

Grab Your GO BAG
Prepare a Go Bag for your household.

A Go Bag is a kit of things you'll need if officials tell you to evacuate
Your Go Bag should be easy to carry – a backpack or small suitcase on wheels
Keep your Go Bag in a place where you can get to it easily, in case you have to leave in a hurry
What to have in your hand
Items for your Go Bag:

Copies of your important documents (insurance cards, photo IDs, proof of address, etc.) in a waterproof and portable container
Extra set of car and house keys
Credit and ATM cards
Cash, especially in small bills like ones, fives and tens
Bottled water and food that will not easily perish spoil, such as energy or granola bars
Flashlight and extra batteries
Wind up or battery-operated AM/FM radio, and extra batteries
Medication. Be sure to refill medications before they expire. Keep a list of the medications each member of your household takes, why they take them, and their dosages.
Personal care items: soap, toothbrush and toothpaste, feminine hygiene products
Child care supplies or other special care items
First-aid kit
Sturdy, comfortable shoes, lightweight raingear, and a mylar blanket
Contact and meeting place information for your household
Small regional map
Still its good to see this sort of thing gaining momentum and exposing more people to the ideal that they should take a more active approach to their own safety.

It is not sudden. During the 60's Civil Defense was serious. however when the hippys came and we lived for the moment, taking care of the masses was not cool. So Civil Defense went away in a state of denial. There have always been those that said preparing was the wise thing to do. However because we can not admit that something very bad can happen, those in power are admitting that a little bad can happen. But it will only last for three days. After that it will be all better.

We are preppers, therefore our attitude does not allow for the head in sand mode. Which seems to be the most favored position of the liberals in general and even some conservatives.

History shows that FAMINE always shows up. Not just sometimes, but always. With Hybrid crops we are making it easy for a world wide famine instead of the historical localized ones.

What is new, is those that have been saying we need to prepare are actually being given a little page space. Yet it is far from the Civil Defense system that was actually going on in 1970.
