I am both proud and worried.

I always told my kids "I served in the Military for 21 years - I did enough time for all of us."
and
"If you are going to join - Go in the Air Force. The pay is the same and you live a lot better"

I am sure he Joined the Marines because that is what Dad did - And I am proud of him - But I would have been happier if he had joined the USAF

After he signed up, I told him "Great, one kid is going to be a Marine, one is going to be a lawyer, now all I need is a prostitute in the family and I will have hit the Trifecta of Bad Careers for my kids"

Retired 27 years. Man I feel for you and my prayers are for you and yours. Looking back I loved the first 15 yrs and the rest was just serving the empire and it's greed. Joining these days is nothing more than serving the bankers a corrupt government. It hurts to feel that way and I think about it every morning I put my flags up, I fly my AZ flag, Marine Corp flag, MIA flag, over my US flag these days. It has gotten more than a few neighbors talking to me, it gives me a chance to open their eyes to the truth.

You should have told him Coast Guard. I did my time in the Marines, but those Coasties work their butts off if they are in a tough area.

Congratulations either way.

Don't take this the wrong way--but is this kid of yours nuts or what?!

He has no other educational options in his life?
You cannot send him to a college or tech school?

He is joining the Marines--and he will not be defending his country, contrary to popular beliefs on this forum.

That all ended years ago.

Now it will be virtually assured he will be sent overseas to Afganistan or some other baloney war zone, and have a good chance of being wounded or worse for absolutely nothing at all.

Get it out of your skull that it will "do him some good."
This is not the country you and I grew up in.

Question: can he get out of this contract.

If so--how soon?

I know that the Marines in Afganistan and Iraq are stepping on mines and getting killed and maimed for absolutely nothing.

Nada. Zip.
They are not fighting for the USA in any way shape or form.
Yes, some of them believe they are--but in reality they are not.

Also this is not the USA anymore.
Joining the military now is just a waste of time.
Especially joining the Marines (an obsolete concept that needs to be disbanded ASAP).

As a former Airman myself, you gave him great advice! :)

To those that advocate a college education versus the military, just talk to a few people in their lower 20's with $50k in student loans and no job. It's not the golden ticket it once was.

As far as TAKEZO's comments, he speaks some truth, albeit a bit abrasive in nature. I know how I would feel if I was still in these days serving in one of our current campaigns.

With out men and women like your son we don't have a country. He's doin the right thing!

Actually we'd have a county, a better country if we brought them back home to defend the USA itself.

They are not defending the USA in these crazy places--they are propelling some unseen, hidden globaloney agenda.

You have your mind in the past.
You're still thinking in the realm of Iwo Jima and the Chosen Reservoir.
This is all in the past. Obsolete thinking.

This country is no longer under the control of its citizens.
Wrap your mind around this.

This guy's kid is making one of the biggest mistakes of his life.
And yes it would be better to join the Coast Guard--there he would be saving lives, not tramping around in some foreign county where he is the "invader/occupier" --not a liberator.

My remarks are never "sugar coated."
I make it as plain as I can.

This is intended to wake up the dunderheads who are still living in the past.
The dunces who still get all weepy eyed when they see the flag passing by.

This is all over.
It's gone.

Wrap your minds around it.

More than likely this guys kid who joins the Marines will wind up as a thug/oppressor in our homeland--obeying orders. Unconstitutional order and putting a tyranny in place.

My nephew just enlisted in the Marines. His dad was in the Marines and begged him not to enlist. He even had the enlister explain where he was going to get sent. He still wanted to do it. No one in the family supports his choice, but he will be 18 soon, so he can make his own choices. Most of the men in our family served in the military; it's just that we feel right now is not a good time to enlist. Hopefully, they'll come home alive or the war will end before they get shipped off.
