Years ago, daughter was awarded full four year "free" tuition to college "far" from home.

Paying for a place for her to live, transport, other misc, would have cost MORE than tuition at school where she could live at home.

:rofl::rofl:

this thread is just another one about how much better socialism is compared to capitalism and America sucks.

I didnt say America sucks. If you feel that way then thats on you . Dont project on me your own fears and doubts.
This is not socialism. Its a public university, not that different from a public school. You know, good public schools such as the ones America used to have when it was a far better country than it is now.
Anyone that wants to pay for a PRIVATE university can go a pay for one. A public ones is of course a lot more affordable, and the logic isnt that hard to understand a)someone that cant afford a private one can attend if he's smart and works hard b)a smart person that does well doesnt just benefit himself, he's an asset to his country as well. There's a bit of a badge of honor around here for those that make it into the public university, it means you got the grades to get in, while the ones that attend private ones didnt cut it. Its not that different from what public and priavate schools used to be like in Argentina back in the day.
Both my parents where the first of their generation to go to univeristy, both accountss, University of Buenos Aires, didnt pay a single cent for attending. Before crying out "socialism" like an uneducated ass, this was back in the 70's, with a very much right wing governmnet in place fighting communist terrorists.
Having good public education doesnt mean socialism. Its jsut means youre not a ****hole. EVERY single ****hole in the world has crappy public education. All developed, high qualtiy societies have goo public services, independently of whats available in the private sector. Its just a matter of fact, not an opinion of mine.
Also, I believe you are confusing capitalism, in wihch people own companies, with corporatocracy, in with the corporations pick politicians to rule over people in their name. Not the same thing. Im very much pro capitalism, being ruled by "Buy n Large" not so much.

Drives me nuts when people say something is free just because they don't pay cash at the point of service.

You always pay. And FerFal has been paying in the form of government taxes for however long he has lived there, as has the son, as has everyone who lives in that country. In fact, everyone is paying for a whole lot of other people.

If that's your bag, OK, I get it. Just don't tell everyone it's free.
Nothing is free, I'm sure I made that clear. I lose no sleep over it because we sure as hell pay a LOT for all the supposedly FREE stuff, from education to medical. I actually have both and pay for private medical as well... which is affordable becuase the public one is also pretty good. That's how I benefit from paying into something I'm not using, at the same time it helps finance it for those that cant afford private. That someone may well be me one day! you never know!

NOW, if I have to chose between that money that I'm paying either way being used for a) my kid getting an education b)buying bombs to blow the **** out of a country I dont know of or care for, just so that Lockheed Martin can make 60 billion a year. I know what I'm choosing.

In my son's case the campus is 20 minute drive from home. :D:

May need to get another car though. Wife wants some cheap daily driver, I want an old Nissan Patrol diesel.:thumb:

As such there's nothing which is free. If you are not paying for the fee, someone else is being made to pay for it. And eventually you will have to pay something in some for for someone else too.

Yup, Im fine with that. Of all the sensless money wasting governments seem to be fond of, education, healthcare, police. Infrastructure, all things worth financing in my book. Im also glad that its illegal for politicians to take "donations" from companies and that donations and contrubtions for politicians in general are tightly regulated. The so called lobbying is a damn disgrace. Nothing more than legalized corrruption.
Boatload of things they get wrong here all the time but these are some of the exceptions.

Thanks man! Yes, super proud. He's starting today with some online classes.

I respect everyone's opinion. Its just interesting to note how it can be quite selective regarding the kind of public sepnding that triggers people or not. Social engineering at its finest.
